An unexpected Tennessee player was on the field for the Vols’ most important play in win over Arkansas
The Tennessee Vols had an unexpected player on the field for their most important play of the game in narrow win over the Arkansas Razorbacks.
A defensive player who’s barely seen any action for the Tennessee Vols this season was on the field for UT’s most important play in Saturday’s win over the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Tennessee sealed the 34-31 win on Saturday when running back Peyton Lewis picked up a first down on third-and-one, which allowed the Vols to kneel out the clock.
Vols redshirt freshman defensive lineman Carson Gentle was in the game as a fullback on the play (he’s No. 35 in the video below).
Gentle, a former three-star recruit from Chattanooga, made a good block on the play, which gave Lewis some running room.
Carson Gentle has barely played this season for the Tennessee Vols
It was certainly a surprise to see Gentle on the field in that situation.
Gentle played in just three games for Tennessee last season, totaling five tackles and a half sack while seeing action against UTEP, Kent State, and Chattanooga.
So far this season, Gentle had played in just two games. He received nine snaps as a defensive lineman against East Tennessee State and 23 snaps as a defensive lineman against UAB.
It’s worth noting that Tennessee was without junior tight end Ethan Davis (due to injury) against Arkansas.
Gentle, who only played the one snap against Arkansas, did his job in a high-leverage moment. Maybe Tennessee fans will see more of him in that role moving forward.
