Update: The Chiefs have officially ruled out Simmons for the Week 6 game against the Lions.

It appears that the Detroit Lions won’t be the only team missing their starting left tackle on “Sunday Night Football.”

The Lions are without Taylor Decker due to injury, and the Chiefs will apparently be without LT Josh Simmons. The standout rookie left tackle was a late addition to the injury report with a “non-injury related” designation. He was listed as questionable, but it appears that the questionable designation was just wishful thinking.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, Simmons is home in California, dealing with what’s being described as a family matter. Rapoport says it’s doubtful that Simmons will be back in Kansas City, Missouri, in time for the game.

This would be a massive blow for Kansas City if Simmons can’t return in time for the game. He hasn’t just been one of the best rookie offensive tackles in football, but he’s been one of the best in football regardless of veteran status.

Who will start for the Chiefs at left tackle in place of Josh Simmons?

Garafolo reports that Jaylon Moore will get the start in place of Simmons. Still, there is a possibility that Wanya Morris is actually the starter on Sunday night. Morris is still listed as the backup left tackle on the team’s “unofficial” depth chart. He’s been listed as the backup left tackle since Week 1 vs. the Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil.

Chiefs 2024 Left Tackle Quick Facts

The Chiefs started four left tackles in 2024. Kingsley Suamataia, Wanya Morris, D.J. Humphries, and Joe Thuney each started at least one game at left tackle. Morris started the vast majority of games at left tackle for the team, while Humphries only started a single game.

We also have some evidence that it could be Morris to get the start in place of Simmons. Morris came into the Week 4 game against the Ravens as the starter at left tackle, while Jaylon Moore played right tackle. Morris didn’t exactly have a standout showing. He was called for offensive holding on a 12-yard gain by rookie RB Brashard Smith in what turned out to be just three offensive snaps.

As for Moore, he also played four snaps at left tackle in Week 2 against the Philadelphia Eagles. He played three more snaps at left tackle in garbage time against the New York Giants in Week 3. He’s also been the Chiefs’ preferred offensive tackle for their heavy personnel when they use an extra offensive tackle.

They certainly can’t go wrong with putting him out there if that’s the choice they go with. We’ll see exactly what that choice is during pregame warm-ups.
