‘It’s a lot of hate’ – Former Alabama DL Terrence Cody compares the Crimson Tide’s rivalries with Tennessee and Auburn
The rivalry between the Tennessee Vols and the Alabama Crimson Tide — the Third Saturday in October — is one of the best rivalries in college football
There are quite a few Alabama Crimson Tide fans — mostly younger fans — who love to suggest that the rivalry with the Tennessee Vols isn’t really a rivalry.
That take is the result of Alabama dominating the series from 2007 to 2022.
Longtime college football fans, however, know better. They know that The Third Saturday in October is one of the most iconic rivalries in the sport.
Former Alabama defensive lineman Terrence Cody, in fact, said this week that there’s more “hate” for Tennessee in Tuscaloosa than there is for the Auburn Tigers.
“It’s a lot of hate” – Former Alabama defensive lineman Terrence Cody describes the Crimson Tide’s rivalry with the Tennessee Vols
Cody, who blocked Tennessee’s game-winning field goal attempt in Tuscaloosa in 2009, joined AL.com this week to discuss The Third Saturday in October rivalry.
“I didn’t know much about [the rivalry] until I started paying attention on campus and seeing how everybody acted that week,” said Cody. “It’s a lot of hate. You think the Auburn rivalry is a lot of hate, but I think there’s more hate in this rivalry than there is in the Auburn rivalry. That whole week, guys were just on edge. People were practicing pissed off. That’s how we approached the game.”
Cody’s comments about Tennessee and Auburn line up with what former Alabama head coach Nick Saban said about the rivalries last year.
“For our players, this was a bigger rivalry than any other game that we played…even bigger than Auburn to our players,” said Saban last season on ESPN. “It was always difficult for me to get our players up for the Auburn game, it was never difficult for the Tennessee game.”
It’s pretty clear that Tennessee vs Alabama is a massive rivalry in both states.
