First, let me preface this by saying that there needs to be more college football shows out there. If someone really wants to find a way to create a TV series based off the 1990s film The Program or some other continuing series, please go right ahead. I’d watch.

And because of my interest in college football fiction, I have been checking out the show on Hulu “Chad Powers”, with Glenn Powell portraying the titular character. I’m sure a number of you have heard of it or are watching it. It plays off the notion of a former college quarterback who’s fallen from grace after blowing the national championship for Oregon and then committing an inexcusable act immediately after. He finds another chance at redemption and greatness by making himself up as a goofy character named Chad Powers. Peyton and Eli Manning are both executive producers of the show.

However, there was a scene in the latest episode that didn’t exactly feel in any way tied to reality when it comes to fans of the Tennessee Vols, whom the South Georgia Catfish – Powers’ team – is in town to play.

A Vol fan was oddly portrayed in “Chad Powers”

For those wondering, here’s how they depicted one Vol fan inside of a Knoxville costume store:

I mean, I have been going to Tennessee football games for over 30 years, and I cannot remember seeing many fans, if any at all, actually dressing up with face paint and prosthetics as Smokey or any other dog for that matter. That seems like something you’d expect to see in Athens or somewhere else. And calling the Vols “Vuhls” is something you aren’t going to hear from any real Tennessee fan, particularly any local one.

Oh well. That’s Hollywood, I suppose. Taking something one step beyond reality for the purpose of entertainment value. And that’s likely something that those in charge of Chad Powers clearly did here. That or just a lack of research.

To each their own. I prefer my fiction relating to sports to be a little bit more on the nose when it comes to reality. Maybe the next time, the “Vuhls” will get a little bit more accurate representation.
