Ryan Day admits a team that Ohio State isn’t even scheduled to play recently caught the attention of the Buckeyes
Ryan Day was smart to point this out to his team.
The Ohio State Buckeyes are sitting nicely at 7-0 after taking care of the Wisconsin Badgers by a score of 34-0. The Buckeyes now head into their second off week before returning to action on Nov. 1 against the Penn State Nittany Lions.
Ohio State learned last season, in the first year of the 12-team College Football Playoff, that there will be some ups and downs. The Buckeyes lost to Michigan a year ago but rallied for four straight impressive wins to close the season. Ryan Day and his team have emphasized taking things one game at a time — and that approach is clearly paying off.
Miami’s loss to Louisville clearly caught the attention of Ohio State.
“We’re all in the hotel (before the Wisconsin game) and we’re watching those Friday night games, and it just gets everybody’s attention,” Day explained on Monday. “It’s good to make sure that we understand that we’ve got to bring it on a week-to-week basis, and we know every week an opportunity to get to Indianapolis is on the line.
“Our guys, they’re not professionals. They’re still 18- to 22-year-olds, and they have to learn the ability to bring it every week. If we stay consistent with our preparation, it gives us a chance to do that. And we know it’s a long season, so every week we’ve got to recharge and bring it on Saturdays.”
Ohio State sits atop the Big Ten alongside Indiana, and at this rate, those two could be on a collision course for the Big Ten Championship in December. The Buckeyes’ biggest remaining test is the Michigan Wolverines, and they’ll likely need that win to secure a spot in Indianapolis. A road slip-up at Oregon last season cost them a chance to play for the Big Ten title, but this year’s team doesn’t look like one that’s going to stumble — unless they completely fall flat.
Day understands the importance of consistency each week. Miami’s upset loss to unranked Louisville as the No. 2 team in the nation served as a reminder of what can happen when focus wavers. If the Buckeyes want to reach all of their goals this season, they can’t afford a performance like that. After the bye, Ohio State will face Penn State, followed by matchups with Purdue, UCLA, and Rutgers before closing the regular season on the road at Michigan.
