Browns HC Kevin Stefanski after the win over the Miami Dolphins. Cleveland Browns on X.

The Cleveland Browns have a clear identity and that showed again during their Week 7 win over the Miami Dolphins. Cleveland has what can be an elite defense on one side of the ball, and a terrible offense on the other side of it. Cleveland’s path to winning is creating chaos on defense and hoping that the offense can do just enough, and that’s what happened in Sunday’s 31-6 win over the Dolphins

Cleveland forced four turnovers on Sunday between the defense and social teams and it was the turnover break they had been searching for. Through the rain and wind the Browns were flying around on defense and found some spotty success on offense to blow Miami out at home. Coming away from the game, it was pretty clear who deserved a game ball.

Jim Schwartz gets a game ball from Kevin Stefanski

Cleveland’s head coach always gives out multiple game balls after wins and the final one went to the defensive coordinator in the locker room after the win on Sunday. Schwartz had his defense ready to play and they were up for the challenge, holding the Dolphins to just six points in the entire game. The funny thing about it all was that Schwartz was clearly getting changed after the game out of wet clothes from the rain and came out to receive his game ball without a shirt on. As soon as the players saw him come around the corner near the end of the video below, their reaction was hilarious.

“We do have a dress code now,” Stefanski joked on Monday. “That was, yeah. Well, the entire defense got a game ball, but I just wanted to point out, Jim, I thought it was a really smart plan and obviously very well executed.”

Cleveland held Miami to 219 total yards and a good chunk of that came in garbage time when the game was already decided. Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa was limited to just 12-of-23 passing for 100 yards and three interceptions. The Browns’ defense had four sacks in all, two on Tagovailoa and a pair on rookie QB Quinn Ewers after they made a change. Miami found some success on the ground with Devon Achane, who ran for 82 yards on 13 attempts, but the Dolphins went away from the ground game.

The Browns have an elite defense that would be even better if the offense were able to maintain drives better. Still, Cleveland ranks first in yards allowed on defense at just 274 yards and they’re allowing just 21 points per game, which is stretched a bit from the 41 points the Baltimore Ravens had back in Week 2. Cleveland will face another good young quarterback on Sunday when it faces the New England Patriots and Drake Maye, and it’ll be another good test for Cleveland’s biggest strength this season.
