Aaron Rodgers has a chance to hit another level with the potential return of a missing weapon on the Steelers’ offense
Aaron Rodgers will welcome any and all pass catchers.
Aaron Rodgers has been a revelation at quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Sure, the team fell last week against the Cincinnati Bengals, and Rodgers did have a head-scratching interception, But you know what else he had?
The go-ahead TD throw to Pat Freiermuth to cap off a four TD day and give the Steelers’ defense a chance to win the game. He did all that, with DK Metcalf largely held in check to the tune of three catches for 50 yards and with his second leading receiver being Roman Wilson, who caught two passes for 17 yards.
Now, Rodgers plays one of the biggest games of his career this week, as he takes on the team he spent nearly two decades with, the Green Bay Packers. And if you listen to Mike Tomlin, it sounds like his WR No. 2 might be back in the fold.
Steelers WR Calvin Austin III expected to practice ahead of Packers game
“Calvin Austin is scheduled to work this week,” said Mike Tomlin via his weekly presser on the Steelers YouTube channel. “We’ll let his participation and the quality of that participation be our guide in terms of his availability. As we stand here today, we’re optimistic, and I know certainly he’s optimistic about his ability to be included.”
Calvin Austin III hasn’t had the breakthrough season that he was hoping for thus far in 2025. After showing serious signs of growth and having the best year of his career in 2024, the hope was for Austin to fully assume the role of WR No.2.
So far that hasn’t been the case.
To be fair, a lot of that is because he was dealing with an injury that he suffered in training camp coming into the season, and then he obviously hasn’t played since Week 4 with the shoulder injury that occurred against the Minnesota Vikings. It’s why there have been reports of the Steelers being in the WR market ahead of the trade deadline on Nov. 4.
But let’s be clear, when Austin is healthy, he is undeniably dynamic. He averaged over 15 yards a catch last season and he works the middle of field by hunting matchups against slower linebackers, safeties, and nickel defenders. Oh, and don’t forget, he’s willing to block his you know what off.
That just so happens to play into the strength’s not only of Arthur Smith’s offense, but of the Steelers’ matchup this week against the Packers. We’ll see if, with Austin fully healthy, the Steelers offense and Aaron Rodgers can level up.
