The Baltimore Ravens are looking for a spark. The hope was that the team, fresh off the bye week, would get their personnel healthy and enjoy the extra preparations in order to serve up a much needed win against the Chicago Bears in Week 8. That may still be in the cards, but the outlook for Baltimore’s return to action suddenly feels a lot more shaky.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported that quarterback Lamar Jackson would not play on Sunday — and now the team has released an official status update. Lamar is out against the Bears.

Lamar Jackson has been downgraded to ‘out’ versus the Chicago Bears in Week 8

Ouch. This has been quite the sudden change for the Ravens and their outlook for Sunday. Jackson was listed as a ‘full’ participant on Friday’s practice, only for reports to emerge on Saturday that he was running the scout team offense and not getting run like a starter would with the first team.

Now, we have official confirmation from the team and the fallout of this development puts the fate of the Ravens’ offense and, potentially, a healthy outlook for the rest of the season, into the hands of Snoop Huntley. Baltimore’s transition at quarterback behind Jackson appears to have Huntley poised to start, which is a tough look for a team that deliberately targeted Cooper Rush as a backup quarterback option for the team this offseason.

Huntley gives the Ravens a chance to run similar concepts to what they can with Lamar and there’s obviously proof of concept for Huntley thanks to his prior time in Baltimore. Will it be enough to secure a sorely needed win? If not, the question no longer becomes “how quickly can Baltimore bounce back?” and instead becomes “will the Ravens stay committed to the messaging amid a season that’s spiraled out of control?”. Here’s hoping it doesn’t come to that, although this news doesn’t help the cause one bit.
