Giants rookie Jaxson Dart continues to face insurmountable challenges without support in Week 8 loss to Eagles
The New York Giants did nothing to help rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart in their loss to the Philadelphia Eagles
The New York Giants suffered a brutal and embarrassing loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 8, falling 38-20 on the road.
Former Giants star running back Saquon Barkley had his best performance of the season, gashing New York for 174 total yards on only 18 touches. The defense was on its heels the entire game as the offensive line struggled to protect Jaxson Dart.
More of the same problems plague the team in a season that was cataclysmically altered in the fourth quarter last week against the Broncos. Let’s look at the most critical takeaways from the game.
Jaxson Dart can’t do everything
While his stats may not reflect it, Dart had another solid performance but was hung out to dry by his supporting cast. He finished the game 14 of 24 for 193 yards and one passing touchdown. He also rushed for 17 yards on six carries with one rushing touchdown.
Had Dart been given adequate blocking and receivers who could get open, his stat line could have been significantly different. Dart had no options to turn to often, yet pulled off impressive improvisational plays like this clip below against one of the most athletic defenses in the NFL.
The Giants’ offensive line had a tough outing, allowing four sacks and five pressures. While some could argue that a number of those sacks were the result of Dart holding the ball too long, the blame should be assessed to his receivers.
Giants get no impact from their receivers, again
Since losing Malik Nabers, it was clear the Giants’ receiver room would not have enough talent. While Wan’Dale Robinson had several solid performances this season, the rest of the group is well below average.
Today’s loss was another example of those talent issues. On multiple instances, Dart hung in the pocket with options available. When the broadcast replay showed the whole field, the picture displayed all of Dart’s targets locked down in coverage. A number of those plays resulted in Dart taking sacks and pressures.
Robinson led the team in receiving with only 48 yards on three catches. Darius Slayton and Beaux Collins were the only two other receivers to catch passes; Slayton finished with two and Collins with one.
Trading for a wide receiver now seems more unlikely, considering the state of the season. It would be unwise to give the front office permission to trade away future capital that would be useful to the next general manager and head coach.
Brutal injuries deflate the Giants
Rookie running back Cam Skattebo suffered a gruesome injury midway through the second quarter when he attempted to catch a pass from Dart. The timing was awful after his hot start to the game with 30 total yards and a touchdown. The injury he suffered was ruled a dislocated ankle, per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.
The loss of Skattebo is extremely deflating considering the energy he brought to the team. He became an emotional leader for the offense through his physical style of play. Not having him for the rest of 2025 would be devastating if that’s the outcome of the injury.
Skattebo wasn’t the only injury to a budding, impact performer, as cornerback Cor’Dale Flott left the game with a concussion. Rookie Korie Black and Deonte Banks stepped in and both struggled mightily. Without Flott and Pauslon Adebo, Black and Banks allowed multiple chunk plays to the Eagles’ passing attack.
Jalen Hurts only finished with 179 total yards passing, but completed 75% of his passes on 20 attempts. He also averages nine yards per attempt with numerous highlight-level throws for touchdowns and conversions.
Today’s loss is merely another example of Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll’s mismanagement of the team. We could harp on their firings more, but most fans understand it’s not a matter of if but when.
