‘I think they have fewer holes’ – ESPN’s Greg McElroy predicts the winner of Tennessee vs Oklahoma
The Tennessee Vols and the Oklahoma Sooners will meet in Neyland Stadium on Saturday night.
ESPN college football analyst Greg McElroy thinks the matchup this weekend in Knoxville between the Tennessee Vols and the Oklahoma Sooners could be a “high-scoring affair.”
McElroy, who has been dismissive of UT football at times this season, made his prediction for the Tennessee vs. Oklahoma game on Wednesday, and it won’t surprise Vols fans that he has the Sooners winning.
The former Alabama quarterback pointed to injuries in Tennessee’s secondary as one of the reasons he’s taking Oklahoma to win what he believes could become a “track meet.”
“I think this game’s got a chance to become a track meet,” said McElroy. “I’m thinking it’s going to be a high-scoring affair. I’m gonna take Oklahoma. I think they have fewer holes than Tennessee right now, and the injuries in Tennessee’s back end defensively really concern me. So even if the Oklahoma passing game has regressed, I think this could be the get-right recipe if their offensive line can hold up and John Mateer can hit some big plays downfield.”
The Tennessee Vols could be without a couple of key defensive starters against the Oklahoma Sooners
Tennessee could be without a couple of key defensive starters against Oklahoma. Starting linebacker Arion Carter missed last weekend’s game against Kentucky due to a turf toe injury. It’s unclear if Carter will play against the Sooners.
Additionally, starting cornerback Colton Hood suffered a calf injury against the Wildcats. Hood’s status for the Oklahoma game is also up in the air.
Carter and Hood are two of Tennessee’s best defensive players. If both are out, it’ll certainly be a huge loss for the Vols’ defense.
But would their absence be enough to give the sluggish Oklahoma offense a boost?
McElroy thinks that will be the case. I guess we’ll all find out on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. ET when Tennessee and Oklahoma kick off in Neyland Stadium.
