Dolphins defender points a not-so-subtle finger directly at the offense after embarrassing loss to Ravens
One Miami standout made his feelings clear about what went wrong against Baltimore.
The Miami Dolphins fell on their faces against the Baltimore Ravens in front of the entire country, which has not become an unfamiliar sight in recent years. This time, a 28-6 was the result of ill-timed mistakes, particularly on the offensive side of the ball.
Both Washingtons (Malik and Tahj) coughed up the football. A false start by tackle Larry Borom – one that Tua Tagovailoa linked to Baltimore fan noise inside Hard Rock Stadium – blew a 4th and 1 chance, and a missed 35-yard field goal followed. Tagovailoa had a late interception on a pedestrian passing day. And a dreadful and objectively wrong penalty on Ollie Gordon II for tripping wiped out a huge gain into the red zone on another drive.
It was a theater of how to stop yourself from scoring and thus winning. And after the game, Dolphins LB Jordyn Brooks appeared to point a finger at one aspect of the offense that he seems to feel contributed to the loss.
Dolphins LB Jordyn Brooks mentions turnovers in postgame press conference after loss to Ravens
“Turnovers,” Brooks said during his press conference when asked how things went the way they did. “We’ve got to capitalize when we get down to the red zone. We just had too many turnovers today, and I feel like that really hurt us.
“I mean, I thought they had a decent game, but a lot of that came towards the end of the game when the game was out of reach. A lot of garbage time, to be honest with you. I felt like we played well defensively in the first half, but like I said, turnovers, that kills you. Not capitalizing, not scoring when we could, giving them the ball back, giving them an extra set of downs. Players like that, they’re going to find a way to get into the end zone. So, we’ve got to capitalize when we’ve got the chance to and play complementary football.”
It’s not every day that you hear a player kind of point a finger as far as blame at another area of the team, but Brooks isn’t shy about speaking his feelings and directing criticism, even on himself. After the loss to the Packers last year, Brooks made waves when he said that the Dolphins played “soft”, which wasn’t untrue.
And in that vein, he’s correct here. The Dolphins turned the ball over up 3-0 in the first quarter inside their own 10-yard line when Tahj Washington fumbled. The Dolphins got Baltimore to 4th and goal at the 1, but Lamar Jackson found Mark Andrews open in the end zone. Take out that fumble, and perhaps this is a tight game going into the half. Malik Washington’s fumble at the Baltimore 10-yard line killed a long drive that could have cut the lead to two scores early in the fourth quarter.
Miami’s defense wasn’t perfect, but had the offense done its job, particularly in the first half, we’re likely talking about at least a substantially different margin on the scoreboard and perhaps a competitive game when all was said and done.
