Penn State’s Terry Smith made a strong admission about two of Ohio State’s best players after the Buckeyes blew them out
They’re certainly up there with the best of the former Buckeyes.
The Ohio State Buckeyes played two very different halves in their Week 10 matchup against the Penn State Nittany Lions. A slim 17–14 halftime lead turned into a 38–14 rout as the Buckeyes pulled away in dominant fashion.
Ohio State racked up 480 total yards against Penn State and its former defensive coordinator, Jim Knowles. The Buckeyes’ defense was only put in a tough spot once — following a fumble deep in their own territory — but held strong throughout the day, allowing just 200 total yards. Most of Ohio State’s production came through the air, as they leaned heavily on their best playmakers.
Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate earn high praise from Penn State HC Terry Smith
Smith caught two touchdowns, and Tate added one of his own in what was a huge day for the Buckeye receiving duo. Tate finished with six receptions for 124 yards, while Smith hauled in five passes for 123 yards. Quarterback Julian Sayin had quite the afternoon himself, consistently finding his top targets.
“They’re the two best guys in the country,” Penn State’s Terry Smith said after the game. “Just watching these guys live — and I don’t mean this disrespectfully to past Ohio State receivers — but these two are better than all of them, and those guys were all good.”
Tate is well on his way to becoming a first-round pick next April, and he continued his breakout season against Penn State. He’s already up to 711 receiving yards on the year and shows no signs of slowing down. The 6-foot-3 wideout is following in the footsteps of recent first-rounders like Emeka Egbuka and Marvin Harrison Jr. Meanwhile, Ohio State gets another year of Jeremiah Smith, who may be the best of them all.
“They were outstanding today. We could not cover them,” Smith admitted.
Ohio State’s deep passing game was on full display Saturday, offering a glimpse of what it will take to repeat as national champions in January. Smith and Tate have already performed on the big stage, and if the Buckeyes keep playing at this level, they’ll be there again. The Buckeyes’ top playmakers shined, and even the opposing head coach made sure they got the credit they deserved.
