Chiefs HC Andy Reid provides brief update confirming injury to RT Jawaan Taylor during Week 9 loss to Bills
Chiefs HC Andy Reid spoke about the injury the team suffered in the Week 9 loss to the Bills.
Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid spoke to reporters after the Week 9 loss to the Buffalo Bills. He provided an injury update on RT Jawaan Taylor, who suffered what the broadcast described as an ankle injury in the fourth quarter of the game.
“Alright, the only injury coming out of it was Jawaan Taylor, who hurt his right ankle,” Reid said.
The team still doesn’t know the severity of the injury. They’ll likely find out more when they return to Kansas City and can do some different tests. The testing will determine whether it’s a high or low ankle sprain and the injury’s grade. With the bye week coming up in Week 9, the difference between high and low ankle sprain will determine whether or not Taylor misses any time. Remember, he played through the majority of the 2024 NFL season with a significant knee injury. If he’s in a situation where he can tough it out, he will.
The injury occurred right at the start of the fourth quarter, when Patrick Mahomes was sacked at the Buffalo 40-yard line by Bills DE Joey Bosa, who beat backup LT Jaylon Moore on the play. On the other side of the formation, RT Jawaan Taylor would be rolled up on and suffer an ankle injury. He went down to one knee and had to be assisted to the sideline by the training staff. He was ruled questionable to return, but he was not ruled out of the game.
Still, Taylor didn’t return to play during the fourth quarter. Instead, it was Wanya Morris, who is fourth up in the offensive tackle pecking order. If the team had another injury at tackle in this game, they’d have to play an interior offensive lineman out of position.
Chiefs’ bye week is coming at the perfect time with the offensive line beat up
At one point during the Week 9 game against the Bills, the Chiefs only had two of their five starters on the offensive line: Creed Humphrey and Trey Smith.
Kingsley Suamataia left the game briefly during the fourth quarter, which put Mike Caliendo at left guard next to his college teammate Jaylon Moore. Wanya Morris, of course, was in the game for the entire fourth quarter in place of Jawaan Taylor. Smith missed last week’s game against the Washington Commanders with a back injury.
This offensive line is beat up and needs the bye week to rest and recover to lick their wounds. The team still awaits the return of starting left tackle Josh Simmons, who has been absent for the past four weeks for personal reasons. Hopefully, when they get back for Week 11 against the Denver Broncos, they’ll be in better shape because that pass rush presents an entirely different set of problems for Kansas City.
