Kansas City Chiefs first-round draft pick, CB Mansoor Delane out of LSU, has been dealing with a mysterious injury throughout training camp.

Fans finally have some more answers on Delane’s injury. Brett Veach sat down with SiriusXM NFL Radio’s Jacob Hester and Pat Kirwan at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri, for Kansas City Chiefs training camp. The conversation covered various happenings for the team this offseason, including the rookie class, undrafted free agent Kahlil Benson, the addition of running back Kenneth Walker, and more.

Veach kicked things off by opening up the conversation about Delane, providing information on the injury that hadn’t been disclosed up to this point.

When did Kansas City Chiefs first-round CB Mansoor Delane’s injury happen and what is it?

The Chiefs’ GM came out right away, not trying to hide anything about the situation revolving around the No. 6 overall pick. Delane’s injury first popped up right at the end of the team’s OTAs. If you’ll recall, he did not participate in mandatory minicamp due to the shoulder issue and was seen working off to the side during those practice sessions.

Delane has been wearing the yellow non-contact jersey in practice ever since the rookies’ head start to training camp began. He only recently put on pads but is still wearing the yellow non-contact jersey. Veach revealed that the injury is a shoulder blade ailment and spoke about the prognosis.

“Starting first with Mansoor (Delane), he had a shoulder blade right toward the end of OTAs,” Veach said. “And so we don’t think it’s going to be long term or anything, but that has to just completely heal.”

This seems to be something that will only stunt his growth during training camp, and that the team doesn’t expect it to be a long-term issue. While it looks likely that he’ll miss preseason Week 1, it’s entirely possible that full participation could allow him to suit up for Week 2 and Week 3 games.

What is Mansoor Delane’s injury recovery timeline?

There’s no denying this injury has set Delane back in his development as a rookie. The coaching staff will need to see him earn their trust in short order once he gets the green light to participate fully. Thankfully, it doesn’t appear they’ll have to wait too long for that full clearance.

“There’s nothing limiting him out there,” Veach said. “You know he’s been taking all the 7-on-7 reps and just not the team periods and the contact stuff. We want to leave him out of that right now, but I would say in the next 7-8 days he’ll probably get the green light to do everything. So, we’re excited about him.”

Sometimes this is the type of thing that can define a player’s career. It’s the type of challenge that can set a player up for success. Look no further than Trent McDuffie’s rookie season, where an injury took the first half of the year. It forced him to focus on the detail work and the things off the field he could do to be mentally prepared so that when his body was physically ready, it could all come together quickly.

Delane has refused to sit out of practices to this point, even while limited. That mindset should give Chiefs fans confidence that the first-round cornerback is approaching this setback the right way. If he follows McDuffie’s blueprint, the shoulder blade injury could end up being little more than a speed bump on the way to a productive rookie campaign.
