Chiefs opted to keep draft capital over acquiring proven playmaker that would have filled their biggest roster need
This was a puzzling decision by Kansas City’s brass.
The NFL trade deadline has come and gone, and the Kansas City Chiefs opted not to make a deal.
Outside of potential free agent signings, Kansas City’s roster is pretty much set in stone for the rest of the season. Defensive line and running back are two position groups that the Chiefs could use improvements, and according to New York Jets reporter Connor Hughes, K.C. had the opportunity to get an upgrade at the latter.
Chiefs made offer for Jets RB Breece Hall
“There was an offer on the table for a fourth-round pick for Breece Hall,” Hughes said on the Jets Final Drive show. “I was told it was from the Kansas City Chiefs, that were willing to trade for Breece Hall. The Jets were steadfast in wanting a third.”
No one within the Chiefs organization has confirmed this report, but if it is true, it’s a puzzling decision by the K.C. brass. A third-round pick for a player the caliber of Hall seems more than fair, and the Chiefs have one of the worst RB corps in the NFL.
Starter Isiah Pacheco has been disappointing this season and has dealt with injuries each of the last three years. Kareem Hunt is mostly a short-yardage specialist, and rookie Brashard Smith remains a work in progress.
As for Hall, he is in the prime of his career at 24 years old, and has recorded over 1,000 yards from scrimmage each of the past two seasons. He is on pace to do so again in 2025, already racking up 581 rushing yards and 178 receiving. He also has 16 total career touchdowns.
Not only would Hall have filled a need for the remainder of this season, but the Chiefs could have signed him to a contract extension and committed to him as their RB of the future as Pacheco and Hunt are both slated to become free agents this spring.
K.C. doesn’t seem to want to invest significant resources into the RB position, but it may want to rethink that strategy. 2020 first-round pick Clyde Edwards Helaire was a bust, and while Pacheco has given solid returns for a seventh-round pick, he clearly isn’t starting material.
Acquiring Hall would have rounded out the Chiefs’ offense nicely, and took some pressure of quarterback Patrick Mahomes having to be Superman on every play — which will likely remain the case for the rest of the season.
