Oklahoma’s Brent Venables dropped one of the best quotes of year before playing Tennessee, but it wasn’t accurate at all
The Oklahoma Sooners upset the Tennessee Vols in Neyland Stadium this past Saturday night in Knoxville.
The atmosphere in Neyland Stadium for the Tennessee Vols’ game against the Oklahoma Sooners this past weekend was easily one of the best in college football so far this season.
Tennessee wasn’t on the right side of the scoreboard at the end of the night — Oklahoma held on for a 33-27 win — but it was still a memorable evening on Rocky Top.
Oklahoma’s social media team took advantage of the incredible atmosphere by putting together a cinematic recap video that featured Sooners head coach Brent Venables dropping one of the coldest quotes of the entire college football season.
“It’s all about accepting a challenge and going in somebody else’s house,” says Venables in the video.
“There ain’t no tomorrow with Oklahoma and Tennessee. You want to know why we’re on prime time TV…..You want to know why it’s at night? You want to know why? Because the Sooners are in town, you understand?”
Brent Venables’ epic quote before playing Tennessee wasn’t exactly accurate
Venables’ quote was perfect for the moment — and it clearly worked as the Sooners played better than the Vols — but it wasn’t accurate at all.
Vols fans will be quick to tell Venables that Tennessee has a “dark mode” game every season around this time of year.
Tennessee had a “dark mode” game against Kentucky on November 2 in 2024.
In 2023, the Vols’ “dark mode” game was in September against South Carolina (due to the fact that Tennessee didn’t have a night home game around Halloween).
Tennessee’s most famous “dark mode” game was played two days before Halloween in 2022 against Kentucky.
This is a relatively new tradition for the Volunteers, but it’s a tradition that was set to continue this season regardless of whether the Sooners were coming to town.
I like Venables a lot. I think he’s a really good coach, I like what he’s about, and I think his team plays extremely hard for him. Getting your team locked in and focused is one of a head coach’s most important tasks on game day. Venables did a great job of doing that before Oklahoma played Tennessee (and it showed on the field). But the quote wasn’t accurate — not even close.

Former Vols offensive lineman shares thoughts on differences in Tennessee’s play-calling under Alex Golesh and Joey Halzle
A significant topic of discussion surrounding Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel over the last year has centered on whether he should relinquish play-calling duties. It’s been 12 years since a head coach who called his own plays won a national championship (Jimbo Fisher at Florida State in 2013). In the current era of college […]
