Giants HC Brian Daboll responds to job security questions after costly decisions blow another late lead
It’ll be yet another week of wondering how secure Giants head coach Brian Daboll’s job is.
The New York Giants are now 2-8 after 10 weeks. Their 24-20 loss to the Chicago Bears added to a long list of disappointing outcomes.
Giants fans and media members are visibly frustrated on social media after the lackluster finish. It’s never been clearer that head coach Brian Daboll will be fired by the end of the season. When asked about his job security after the game, he gave a simple answer.
“I’m just focused on these guys in the locker room,” Daboll told reporters.
Will Brian Daboll be fired soon?
The Giants have reached a new level of pathetic this season, blowing yet another fourth-quarter lead. They’ve now lost four games this year when leading by 10 or more points on the road.
The Giants entered the fourth quarter with a 17-10 lead, and a win was in grasp as the offense consistently gashed the Bears’ struggling defense. Once rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart was ruled out with a concussion, all of the momentum was yanked away from the Giants.
At the start of the fourth quarter, Daboll made yet another inexplicable coaching decision that ultimately cost them the game. Despite not having Dart, the Giants marched down the field with multiple chunk gains from Devin Singletary to reach the red zone.
Despite having the ball at the Chicago 1-yard line, the Giants opted to kick a short field goal to take a 20-10 lead. The Giants were even granted a first down after the Bears were flagged for too many men on the field during the field goal attempt. For some reason, Daboll elected to decline the penalty and take the three points. His explanation for that decision was puzzling.
“I thought about it. I thought take the points, get a 10-point lead in the fourth,” Daboll told the media. “I thought our defense was playing good.”
And of course, the defense completely collapsed. A 91-yard and a 53-yard drive helped secure the victory for the Bears as Giants fans sat in disgust at the result of another blown lead.
After the loss, defensive leader Dexter Lawrence was asked about the possibility of his head coach being fired. He seemed to frame it as the perspective of outsiders does not match that of those in the building.
“It doesn’t matter what anyone else’s opinion outside of this facility, whatever they say doesn’t really matter,” Lawrence stated. “We just gotta come back Wednesday and get ready to practice.”
I find it hard to believe that vibes are high in the locker room enough to continue to support Daboll. He’s bungled games numerous times this season, and it couldn’t be more evident that it’s his fault. We’ll find out this week if Daboll is afforded another chance to coach this team, because today’s loss may have been the last straw.
