The Miami Hurricanes got a much-needed win over Syracuse on Saturday afternoon at Hard Rock Stadium, clubbing the Orange 38-10. It was a game that, in some respects, got a tad of the bad taste out of the Canes’ mouths from a 42-38 playoff-ending loss to the Cuse last season.

But there was a moment during the game that had some Miami fans sit forward in their seats. During a timeout, the ESPN camera caught Mario Cristobal and Fran Brown jawing at each other from across the field.

Cristobal was asked about the exchange on Monday morning during his weekly hit on the Joe Rose Show, and he noted it was a matter of two competitors fired up in the moment.

“It’s just competitive,” Cristobal said of his relationship with Brown. “I think people overblow stuff. So, it’s football, many, you know what I mean? Play ball, let the players play, and that’s about it.

Brown apparently made a comment that was a true eyebrow raiser, with ESPN sideline reporter Kris Budden saying Brown told his team at the half that “we had Miami ready to quit, but we let them off the hook with too many self-inflicted penalties.” Cristobal was asked about that, and in Cristobal style, he had a relatively muted but sharp response regarding the comment and the game.

“The talk game is cheap, you know. I didn’t look like the quitting bunch at thirty-eight [to] three.”

Brown irked some Canes fans in the aftermath of the 2024 game last season, when he yelled during the postgame interview, “hey, Dabo Sweeney, congrats, I got you in, baby”, referring to Miami falling out of the ACC championship game with the loss and Clemson making it to Charlotte instead.

Now, Miami extracted some revenge and got to serve Brown a slice of humble pie in the process. We’ll see if the Canes can finish this season with a trip to the College Football Playoff, something Brown and the Cuse denied them last year.
