Notre Dame football named the biggest threat for an elite recruit battling against a swarm of SEC programs
Notre Dame football continues to push for several elite 2028 recruits. They have been named the biggest threat for a top-100 tight end.
Notre Dame football continues to build recruiting momentum heading into the 2028 class, and 4-star Chattanooga (Tenn.) Baylor School tight end Braxton Rein is a name to watch closely.
While head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish staff prepare for fall camp beginning on Thursday, the program’s pursuit of elite talent on the recruiting trail has not slowed down. Rein is considered one of the best overall offensive players in the 2028 recruiting class, and Notre Dame is firmly in the mix.
Rivals national recruiting analyst Chad Simmons recently made predictions for where some of the top uncommitted 2028 recruits will end up. While Simmons predicted Rein to Ole Miss, he listed Notre Dame as the biggest potential threat in this recruitment.
Simmons wrote that Rein’s recruitment does remain wide open, but Ole Miss has consistently stood out and created the best foundation entering fall camp. However, Notre Dame, Alabama, and Florida remain firmly involved.
That assessment should not come as a surprise for anyone who has followed Notre Dame’s recruiting history at tight end. Anytime there is a talented tight end on the board, the Fighting Irish cannot be counted out. Freeman and his staff have recruited and developed the position as well as any college program historically.
That track record gives Notre Dame a legitimate foundation to make a strong push for Rein as his recruitment plays out.

On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, the 6-6, 230-pound pass catcher is currently rated as the No. 141 overall player, the No. 7 tight end, and the No. 9 player from the state of Tennessee for the 2028 recruiting class. On 247 Sports’ own individual ranking, Rein currently sits as the No. 44 overall player, the No. 2 tight end, and the No. 2 player from the state of Tennessee for the class.
An elite group of potential suitors have continued to pursue Rein over the last several months, with the talented prospect now holding upwards of 30 total offers. Some of his top offers include the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, LSU, Michigan, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Oregon, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Auburn, Duke, Florida State, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, NC State, UNC, UCLA, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin, SMU, and Northwestern, among several others.
Considering an elite-level recruit with an outstanding offer list and production on both sides of the football, it’s easy to see why a program like Notre Dame would be so infatuated with a player like Reine. While Ole Miss enters the fall as the perceived leader, keep a close eye on the Fighting Irish in this recruitment moving forward.
