Steelers’ Cam Heyward gets out of character with eyebrow-raising comments regarding the lack of preparation in Pittsburgh
Cam Heyward seems to be sending a message through the media.
If there ever was a player who was a company man in the NFL, it would be Cam Heyward of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Even when things could have gotten ugly between him and the Steelers with his contract dispute, he still showed up to prevent being a distraction.
It’s why Heyward has the moniker “Captain Cam.” Whether it’s on the field, in the locker room, or in the community, Heyward is holding himself to an elite standard. And that often includes being proactive instead of reactive. Being the voice of reason instead of a part in the drama.
But following Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, Heyward couldn’t help but speak his mind regarding some of his teammates and their professionalism.
Cam Heyward calls out the Steelers’ preparation vs. the Chargers
“I’m not looking for an excuse. I’m looking to just play better,” said Heyward, via Steelers Depot by way of WPXI’s Black and Gold-Zone post-game show. “Do we really know what we’re doing, play in and play out? Do we trust the guy next to us? Defense, offense, do we trust each other to be in the right spots to make plays?”
Man, those are some deep comments that put just about everyone in Pittsburgh on notice. Insinuating that players aren’t in the right spot is a direct shot at coaching, while questioning the trust among teammates is a statement few would have seen coming from someone with the built-up equity that Heyward has.
“There were just plays to be made on defense that we didn’t [make],” added Heyward. “You gotta use this as a lesson and learn from your mistakes on the opposite side of the ball. Obviously, we had turnovers; obviously, we didn’t convert, especially in the red zone. But gotta learn from those mistakes. Special teams, same thing, new points on the board, that’s what happens.
“Or you can look at the bad, it is what it is, but I’m all about owning it. Can’t shy away from it. Gotta grow. You better [find a] play to be made. But, it’s not always going to be as easy as we want, but you got to find ways to get the ball back when you.”
Safe to say the Steelers need a win for more reasons than one come Sunday.
