Mike Tomlin hints that long-awaited wide receiver help may be on the way for the Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers could see a new face on the sidelines very soon.
The Pittsburgh Steelers made it through the entire offseason after trading George Pickens and through the NFL trade deadline, and they still didn’t address the hole in the WR room. In fact, Pittsburgh has been more concerned with adding help in the defensive backfield than they have the WR corps.
And while it’s been a few weeks since Jeremy Fowler first reported that Marquez Valdes-Scantling would be joining the Steelers. We have yet to see him in the black and gold, let alone catching passes from his former QB.
But according to Mike Tomlin, that could be changing soon.
Steelers could use Marquez Valdes-Scantling in near future
“We’ll see what the week holds for him and all the others on practice squad,” said Tomlin when asked if MVS would be making his debut against the Cincinnati Bengals via the Steelers YouTube channel. “Man, we’re not opposed to elevating people and giving them an opportunity to contribute. I think it’s just been about every game this year where we’ve elevated someone and utilized their talents.”
“Last week it was Mark Robinson, who we just reacquired. Several other weeks, man, it’s been Trey Sermon, for example. And so I’m certainly open to evaluating Scantling, his ability to know what to do and the quality of that execution and how it might fit into what we’re trying to do offensively in an effort to engineer victory.”
Valdes-Scantling rose to notoriety during his time with the Green Bay Packers and Aaron Rodgers from 2018 through 2021. The WR, who recently turned 31, would go on to win two Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs before having a litany of stops in recent years.
Most recently, MVS was with the San Francisco 49ers, whom he opted to sign with over the Steelers back in the summer when Pittsburgh was first pursuing him. His time last season with the New Orleans Saints was the most productive he’s been in recent years.
I’m not sure if MVS still has the game-breaking speed he once did, but even the threat of stretching the field vertically will be beneficial to DK Metcalf and the rest of the offense. Because right now it feels like Metcalf or bust.
And the numbers show the same thing. Metcalf has nearly the double the amount of receiving yards as the Steelers’ second leading pass catcher, who is Pat Freiermuth, a name that was forgotten until the Bengals game the first go round.
So maybe MVS can provide a spark within the Steelers’ offense. He just has to get on the field.
