The Carolina Panthers were in serious need of a get-right game and needed to send a strong message following the Week 10 loss to the New Orleans Saints. Fueled by a record-breaking gutsy performance from quarterback Bryce Young, the Panthers sent that intended message on Sunday.

Following the overtime win against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 11, the Panthers improved to 6-5 on the season and 2-1 in divisional play. It’s still too early to consider games a must-win, but the Panthers absolutely needed to have that kind of game on Sunday.

Looking ahead to Week 12, the Panthers have found themselves in a tight race for the NFC South after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers dropped another critical game on Sunday to the Buffalo Bills. As a result, an opportunity is now there for the Panthers to pounce on next Monday night.

Panthers have a chance to lead the NFC South in Week 12

With a win over the San Francisco 49ers one week from today on “Monday Night Football” the Panthers can overtake the Buccaneers for the NFC South lead, but Carolina will also need a little bit of help before they face off against the 49ers.

On Sunday, the Buccaneers will travel to take on the red-hot Los Angeles Rams in a game prime for a high-scoring shootout, the style of game the Buccaneers have been inconsistent at pulling off throughout much of the 2025 regular season. With a Bucs loss and a Panthers win in Week 12, Carolina will be atop the NFC South standings. And things sound grim for the Bucs chances according to Evan Winter of A to Z Sports Tampa Bay.

“This Bucs team is a mess and I don’t see it getting any better as they travel to LA to take on the Rams in Week 12. Plus, there’s the fact Sean McVay is 3-2 against Todd Bowles since the latter came to Tampa Bay in 2019. The Rams offense is perfectly tailored to beat a Bowles defense and I expect Matthew Stafford and Co. to have a big day.

The Bucs defense has turned into a sieve and the offense is inconsistent – primarily Baker Mayfield at quarterback, lately. Then, there’s the dismal mess that is special teams. The Bucs haven’t been good in all three phases, lately, and it’s a big reason why they’ve lost two games in a row and three of the last four.

They aren’t winning this game, which will leave the Panthers with a prime opportunity to take over the NFC South with a win over the San Francisco 49ers next Monday night.” – Winter

Current NFC South Standings

  1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-4)
  2. Carolina Panthers (6-5)
  3. Atlanta Falcons (3-7)
  4. New Orleans Saints (2-8)

It’s going to be a tight divisional race down the stretch. Carolina still has six games remaining plus the late bye week to regroup. After the bye week, the two dates against the Buccaneers in Week 16 and Week 18 could ultimately determine the division. Turns out the late bye week was a blessing and not a curse for Carolina.

And, as fate would have it, the Panthers have some familiar faces standing in the way to prevent a playoff berth with games against Baker Mayfield (Week 16 & 18 vs. Buccaneers), Christian McCaffrey (Week 12 vs. 49ers) and Sam Darnold (Week 17 vs. Seahawks) still to come.
