After a seemingly endless news cycle over the last two years, the San Francisco 49ers appear to be reaching the end of the road with superstar wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. They look to be nearing a decision to move on from a player who seemed like one of their most promising building blocks for the next several seasons.

Fifteen months ago, the two sides reached an agreement on a contract extension that ended a long summer of trade rumors and the potential of sitting out for practices and games. However, just a few short months after signing that extension, Aiyuk suffered a season-ending knee injury. Since then, it’s been nothing but tension between the two sides, and it has reached a breaking point within the organization.

According to Dianna Russini and Michael Silver of The Athletic, the 49ers appear poised to move on from the once-budding superstar, who has likely played his last down in a 49ers uniform.

What went wrong with Brandon Aiyuk?

Aiyuk has frustrated many within the organization. According to Silver and Russini, Aiyuk failed to attend meetings and participate in several team activities, cutting off virtually all communication with the team. In response, the 49ers voided all guaranteed money in his freshly signed contract extension, citing that his lack of effort is akin to failing his obligations in the contract. For those keeping score at home, that’s 27 million dollars of guaranteed money between his option bonuses and salary for 2026.

Despite losing out on such a steep amount of money, Aiyuk decided not to file a grievance with the NFLPA to contend it. Such a move indicates Aiyuk’s willingness to simply be done with the whole situation, and the 49ers are in agreement with him there.

What happened to this whole situation? How did the 49ers go from a 2023 season where Aiyuk helped lead the team to a Super Bowl appearance with 1,342 receiving yards and seven touchdowns to both sides wanting to be free of each other, not even two full years apart?

I spoke with A to Z Sports colleague Rob Gregson, who covers the Pittsburgh Steelers. As a reminder, the Steelers were the most linked to team with a potential Aiyuk trade last summer, and there are rumors that a deal was in place just before they agreed to an extension.

“Brandon Aiyuk was one of the best WRs in the league in 2023, blossoming into the do it all WR that he projected to be during his time at ASU. But then came the loss in the Super Bowl and the murmurs started to intensify. It all started with Aiyuk hinting that he wasn’t targeted enough in the big game, and by the end of the summer, Aiyuk held him self out of all team activities and even openly flirted about joining the Steelers and Commanders on X/Twitter.

“But the two sides put their swords down and Aiyuk opted to stay with the 49ers and veto a trade that would have sent him to Pittsburgh. Then everything changed. A bad knee injury cost him the rest of his 2024 season, and looks like it will cost him 2025. Beyond the physical scars, the emotional ones may have become too much for the 49ers to overcome. Between all the bad blood and the injury, it looks like the two sides are headed for divorce in a relationship that should have never taken the next step.”

According to Silver and Russini, even players on the team have been met with nothing but silence from Aiyuk during his rehab process. He shows up earlier than his teammates and leaves before anyone else shows up. It’s frustrated even head coach Kyle Shanahan, who has evidently reached a boiling point over the receiver’s antics as a distraction for this team.

When the two sides do decide to part ways, Aiyuk will hit free agency as one of the best free agents to hit the market in recent memory, and several teams are likely to be interested in him as a playmaker. However, I’m sure there will be plenty of concerns over this latest saga, and he will likely have to regain the trust he’s lost around the league over this.
