One of the trademarks of the Tennessee Vols’ offense is the tempo that it utilizes at times.

Tennessee doesn’t go tempo quite as much as it did during the first two years of the Josh Heupel era (that’s in part because of clock rule changes following the 2022 season).

The Vols, however, still use tempo, but Tennessee will also slow things down when the moment calls for it.

Florida linebacker Aaron Chiles comments on Tennessee’s offense when it uses tempo

Tennessee will head to the Swamp this weekend for a matchup against the Florida Gators.

Florida linebacker Aaron Chiles met with reporters on Monday to preview the game against Tennessee and he was asked about the Volunteers’ tempo.

“With their tempo, I would say they’re more together,” said Chiles. “When they have an explosive play, they like to get back on the ball and stuff like that. So with us, I think the big thing will be just making sure our communication is good. Make sure we’re getting the play in and we’re getting set.

“I don’t think they do a lot of fancy stuff with their tempo. When they run tempo, the plays aren’t going to be fancy plays. But what they do good is catch defenses off guard, I would say. So the biggest thing for us coming into this week is making sure our team is set. Making sure we just have our cleats ready to play.”

There haven certainly been times this season when it seems like Tennessee’s play-calling is predictable when using tempo (such as going to an inside run after picking up a first down, which often goes for no gain). The Vols would be wise to throw a few new tempo wrinkles at the Gators on Saturday night in Gainesville.
