For the last few years, the Carolina Panthers have been the laughing stock of the NFL and have slowly been navigating through the rebuild process with a revolving door of head coaches and quarterbacks leading the team.

It seems like the Panthers have finally found something with the connection between head coach Dave Canales and quarterback Bryce Young, paving the way to a 6-5 start in the second season working together.

The Panthers, despite the strong start and some big wins, have been flying under the radar this season and in Week 12 earned some more national recognition, thanks in part to a record-breaking performance from their young quarterback.

Bryce Young named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for Week 12 performance

Young had another eventual outing in Atlanta last Sunday against the Falcons to say the least. The last time he played the Falcons on the road in Week 18 of 2024, Young had a five touchdown game to end the season on a high note but received little recognition for his insane game.

In his first game back, Young had another all-star type of performance throwing for a single-game franchise record 448 yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions. Not to mention Young briefly left the game after the second offensive drive and returned, playing through an ankle injury.

This time around, Young was recognized for his gutsy performance by being named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week.

For Young, he’s not interested in the individual awards or records, he even said so after Sunday’s game when he was told he surpassed Cam Newton’s franchise single-game passing record.

“It doesn’t mean anything,” Young explained. “I’m grateful that we won; we had the most important stat today, and it was a win. That’s all that matters. But again, being able to be mentioned with Cam, with a player of that caliber who I have so much respect for, it’s definitely an honor.”

Fittingly, Young became the first Panthers quarterback to earn the honor since Newton did so following his Week 7 performance during the 2018 season. Young is the fifth Panthers player to be named Player of the Week this season, joining running back Rico Dowdle, kicker Ryan Fitzgerald, punter Sam Martin, and safety Tre’von Moehrig.

Carolina will be hoping this kind of performance from Young isn’t just a one-off but a sign of things to come and something that can hopefully continue next Monday against the San Francisco 49ers.
