Tennessee AD Danny White details the 2 questions that need to be answered to determine if more seating is added to Neyland Stadium
Tennessee Vols athletic director Danny White recently suggested that Neyland Stadium could be expanded.
Tennessee Vols athletic director Danny White raised some eyebrows on Rocky Top recently when he tweeted that UT is “actively exploring” adding more seats to Neyland Stadium.
“Interest in the Vols continues to skyrocket with a current season ticket interest list of 26,972,” tweeted White earlier this month. “We are actively exploring the viability of expanding the north end zone, which will allow us to welcome even more fans to Rocky Top.”
Neyland Stadium currently has a capacity of 101,915.
Danny White details the two questions that need to be answered to determine if more seating will be added to Neyland Stadium
White joined WNML’s SportsTalk on Wednesday and he detailed the two questions that need to be answered to determine whether Neyland Stadium will eventually expand.
If seats are added to Neyland Stadium, White wants to ensure that it results in more seats for students and additional season-ticket opportunities for fans currently on waiting lists.
“We’re looking into the viability of it,” said White of potentially adding seating to Neyland Stadium “And we looked at it a year or so ago on the south end, and it really didn’t make sense with the topography of the stadium. As you all know, it’s a lot higher to get up to the upper deck there on the south end. So we’re looking at it on the north [end] now. I think we owe it to our fans to do that. There are so many that want season tickets. We just can’t offer that. And probably even more importantly, just because of their finite amount of time on campus, I think we owe it to our students. We need more student seats in Neyland Stadium. It’s a huge priority for us, and we’ve been looking for ways to do that.
“So we’re exploring it to see if it’s possible from a logistics standpoint, and then obviously, [we’re exploring] if it’s financially viable. But it’s something we’d love to do. I wouldn’t want to pin ourselves down on a number (of seats) right now. But if it’s not a significant increase, I think it’s probably not worth doing it. I think the two solutions we’d be looking for is does it substantially increase the size of our our student section [and] our ability to get more students in the game? And does it substantially increase the offerings for more season ticket opportunities for our fans that want them?”
Tennessee is in the early stages of stadium expansion conversations, but it certainly sounds like they’re serious about adding seats to Neyland Stadium.
