Oklahoma starter who ‘created momentum and belief’ vs. Missouri made it even more obvious he is the key to Sooners’ future CFP success
The Sooners went to Isaiah Sategna when it mattered most vs. Missouri.
The Oklahoma Sooners are one win away from making the College Football Playoff, their first in the Brent Venables era. On Saturday, they beat the Missouri Tigers at home, after beating the Tennessee Volunteers and Alabama Crimson Tide on the road. This win wasn’t pretty, just like those others. But, it’s a win nonetheless. When the Sooners offense looked down and out, wide receiver Isaiah Sategna made an insane play.
“Huge play,” Venables told reporters after the big win. “Against a quality of defense like Missouri, that’s a huge play in these kinds of games. It created momentum and belief, all of those things.”
The offense still looks very, very bad. However, it’s clear that Sategna will be the engine and the key to unlocking more of it, which could only bring some future success in the CFP.
Oklahoma Sooners need Isaiah Sategna to be successful on offense
Let’s of course be clear here: the Sooners still have to win one more game against the LSU Tigers to get into the CFP. They should beat them, but in the SEC, you really never know what’s going to happen.
Should they beat them Tigers at home, like they did this Saturday, OU would be heading towards the CFP with maybe the best defense among the playoff teams. They would also likely have the worst offense among those teams, too.
On Saturday, Sategna once again made it clear that he is the guy the offense has to go through if the Sooners want that side of the ball to be more than just a team who runs it. They have to get him in space and let him do his thing, just like they did on Saturday on the 87-yard touchdown.
Sategna is the only one who can get open enough to be the engine of the offense. He’s the only who has shown he can create plays with the ball. When QB John Mateer goes to him, the offense usually does some good things, that is if Mateer delivers it to Sategna on time and on target. On Saturday, Mateer had a play where he missed Sategna pretty badly wide open.
When they play teams in the College Football Playoff, they won’t always be able to get by on just having an elite defense. The defense won’t always create turnovers and put the offense in advantageous positions like they did Saturday and last week, and against Tennessee. The offense has to step up, and if Mateer won’t end up making enough game winning plays, put the ball in Sategna’s hands and he will.
