Brent Venables says the ugly truth out loud about the Oklahoma Sooners’ win over the Missouri Tigers
Brent Venables and the Sooners have to get their offense fixed.
The Oklahoma Sooners won their fifth AP-ranked win of the season, the most of any team in the country. It was an ugly win, much like their road win against the Tennessee Volunteers and the Alabama Crimson Tide — all defense, and very little offense.
In fact, the offense has been getting a bit better, but nothing major. And by a bit better, I mean that they have stopped turning the ball over. Other than that, the offense hasn’t really changed. They scored two big touchdowns on Saturday against the Missouri Tigers, got into field-goal range once, but were very, very bad the rest of the game.
“Hard to get into a really good rhythm,” head coach Brent Venables told reporters after the 17-6 win over Missouri. “Got to be better. There is more there, and we missed opportunities to stay on schedule. We will learn from those. You’re 8-2 last week and 9-2 this week. I’m proud of our guys for their body of work and commitment, but nobody’s handing out trophies. There’s no badge of honor other than playing the game a certain way.”
Oklahoma Sooners need to get their offense together before it’s too late
It may already be too late to get their offense together, but they have one more game, against the LSU Tigers, to fix their offense before they get to the College Football Playoff. That is, if they even make it, because to do so, they have to beat LSU.
The Sooners need to get their passing game back on track. They can’t be a one-dimensional team in the CFP, especially when their one dimension is running the ball, and their running back room is very banged up.
They have the weapons to be a passing team, and offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle wants to air it out; it’s just up to the quarterback’s execution. This pretty much all falls on John Mateer’s shoulders — getting the offense right, that is.
When you watch some of the things the offense as a whole does, it’s clear this offense could be very good. Mateer misses a lot of things in this offense, just like he did Saturday. But, he’s winning football games, and right now that’s all you can ask for.
