Last season, when the Missouri Tigers beat the Oklahoma Sooners, a bottom-of-the-SEC team dealing with injury purgatory, Eliah Drinkwitz made a witty remark that rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. His first words when getting to the podium were “Yeah, this will be really disappointing to Bob Stoops, but OU doesn’t always whip Missouri’s a**.”

Of course, the trash talk leading up to this former Big 8 rivalry game was enough. But the head coaches talking trash is a bit different. Drinkwitz, who comes off as the off-brand version of Lane Kiffin, didn’t have anything to say on Saturday after the Sooners beat Missouri down at home. And, OU head coach Brent Venables didn’t have anything to say trash talk to say either.

That’s the difference between the two.

Brent Venables is the perfect head coach for Oklahoma

After the game, Venables continued to praise Missouri, telling everyone how good a team they were and how elite the defense was that Oklahoma faced. He mentioned as well that Drinkwitz does a good job at doing certain things like getting his guys to play hard — you know, all of the coach-speak things.

Venables doesn’t do all that type of stuff, as you could see, he didn’t when the Kiffin and Ole Miss Rebels drama was started just a few weeks ago with the sign-stealing nonsense. Venables is humble and lets his coaching and players do the talking on the field. That’s how it should be, and that’s why he is the best head coach for Oklahoma.

Sure, it’s taken him a bit to get to where he’s at now, but winning is not easy, especially in the SEC. Before Venables was the head coach, this team did not have any sort of culture. Lincoln Riley left, and he left the place a mess for others to clean up. Venables did that, and now there’s a culture in town.

The Sooners are defensive-minded. They’re tough, blue-collar, and just beat you down all game long. But they work hard, too. They’re “Hard to Kill,” as you’ve likely seen on all of the players’ T-shirts lately. Venables is the better head coach than Drinkwitz, and he doesn’t need to say anything to prove it — his team is for him.
