It was a day of celebration at the University of Wyoming on Saturday, with quarterback Josh Allen getting his jersey retired. I had the privilege and honor of getting to attend the game, and the crowd was more than ready to just see the phenom step on the field.

It was one of the loudest pops at a sporting event when Allen eventually took the field, taking in all the sights and sounds and waving to fans along the way. He deserved every second of the applause for what he’s been able to accomplish since setting foot inside War Memorial Stadium.

However, it’s what Allen was doing ahead of the jersey retirement that is turning heads. More specifically, the night before, Allen was talking to the University of Wyoming players and had a statement that I personally couldn’t agree less with. Allen was opening up about his “why,” what drives him, and how he’s able to compete.

“My why? I wish I could tell you that it was for someone else. For me. I (expletive) love this game, I love competing, I love winning. I love, and this is going to sound really weird, I love feeling like I feel today after a loss. I love feeling hurt; it gets me going, it really does. I got the chills thinking about it, man, I (expletive) love this game. You’ve got to be a little sick to love this game, because it can take a lot from you, but it can give you a whole lot, too.”

I don’t agree with Josh Allen, and that’s okay

Allen fires me up anytime he takes the mic, but there’s one point that I need to disagree with. In the loss against the Houston Texans, Allen was sacked eight times in the contest. What’s more, in the early stages of the loss, Allen was dragged down hard from behind and was in clear pain on the field. The entire fan base waited with bated breath for him to pop back up and get on the sideline.

If Allen goes down for any substantial time, the team would be in some serious trouble.

The reigning MVP talking about how he loved feeling how he felt after the loss, feeling hurt is the last thing that the fan base wants from their superstar quarterback. He did preface it by saying that you need to be a little sick to love the game, and that was apparent with his statements.

It’s all love for No. 17; we would just prefer if he didn’t get beaten up as much, especially this season.

It’s a powerful quote, and I understand the mentality behind it. But I can’t help feeling uneasy about it after he was brought down nearly 10 times against the Texans. His competitiveness is inspiring, but I just don’t want the “hurt” to come from such physical punishment.

Allen’s passion is what makes him who he is, and he’s impossible to deny. Even after a tough loss and way too many pressures and hits, he remains focused and driven, ready for more.
