The Oklahoma Sooners are a defensive juggernaut in the SEC. They have the best defense in the country, and that is why they have won the games they have won. The offense has been pretty poor all around. However, they do have an identity, even if it’s not what the fans want to hear. Regardless, it’s what needs to be said.

“They do what winning requires, and they compete their butt off every single week,” offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle told reporters. “That’s the identity: always go out there and figure out a way to win the football game. Do we want to be more explosive? Absolutely. There are things we could be doing better, but at the end of the day, is this a tough group that does what winning requires?”

Sooners’ offense is bad, but they’re winning games

Arbuckle makes a fantastic point. Sure, the offense isn’t playing great, but it’s not that this team isn’t trying. They are trying, and it’s getting closer. But for now, they are an offense that is just not losing games for the Sooners.

They’re not winning games solely on the offense; the defense is doing that. The offense is being complementary, as they aren’t costing the Sooners games by turning the ball over. That hasn’t been the consistent identity of the team, but it’s been the identity of the last few games.

The offense is doing something right – the Sooners have won nine games and are in position to make the College Football Playoff if they beat the LSU Tigers this week. The offense struggles, but when the defense gives them some help, they often turn it into points.

This past week against the Missouri Tigers, they scored two offensive touchdowns, both passing touchdowns, which is an improvement.

Sooners’ offensive stats in 2025 (SEC Rankings)

  • Scoring Offense: 12th in the SEC (27.27 points per game)
  • Total Offense: 13th in the SEC (350.1 yards per game)
  • Rushing Offense: 11th in the SEC (128.2 yards per game)
  • Passing Offense: 11th in the SEC (221.9 yards per game)

Outside of being an offense that wins games, if there were an actual identity of this team’s offense, it would have to be one that runs the ball well. When healthy, this running game has been a reliable strength, but injuries and inconsistent health have hampered its development into an elite unit.

The Sooners need to improve on offense, but there isn’t much time left. Right now, it’s all about being an offense that doesn’t make a ton of catastrophic mistakes that can cost them a game. The defense is so good that they can keep themselves in games on that alone. The offense needs to provide moments here and there without making game-losing mistakes.
