Notre Dame football and head coach Marcus Freeman have been recruiting on an extremely high level during the 2026 class, and that momentum has begun to spill over into the 2027 group. The Fighting Irish have been doing a tremendous job attracting a long list of impressive linebackers during his tenure, which continued on Wednesday.

The Fighting Irish landed a commitment from 2027 Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy linebacker Amarri Irvin. The IMG Academy star chose Notre Dame over finalists Georgia, Nebraska, and North Carolina. Funny enough, this wasn’t the first member of the Irvin family who was committed to the Irish. That last name should begin ringing some bells for some Notre Dame fans.

When it comes to recruiting, Notre Dame has tended to value the sons of former NFL and college football players. Irvin clearly fits that mold, coming from a great football family. They have also tried more and more to get into IMG Academy, a place that has given them some difficulties in the past. With one commitment, Notre Dame has accomplished both of those goals.

Amarri Irvin’s recruiting background

The last name should sound familiar to those who follow recruiting, as Amarri is the younger brother of Sedrick Irvin Jr., who was once committed to the Irish back in the 2023 recruiting class. Notre Dame opted to move on from Irvin at that time, and he now plays for Stanford. His father was a standout running back with Michigan State back in the 1990s.

The younger Irvin is a talented player in his own right. He is considered a four-star player by multiple major recruiting platforms. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Irvin sits as the No. 236 overall player, the No. 14 linebacker, and the No. 23 player in the state of Florida for the 2027 recruiting class.

The 6-0, 220-pound defender has been pursued by a long list of extremely impressive programs. Some of Irvin’s top offers include the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Texas, Oregon, Michigan, Florida, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Penn State, Florida State, Nebraska, Kentucky, Kansas State, Pittsburgh, SMU, Louisville, Michigan State, Colorado, UNC, Arkansas, Stanford, and Duke, among others.

As a junior this season, Irvin has solidified himself as an important member of the IMG Academy defense. In nine games, he is tied for third on the team with 36 total tackles. Irvin has also recorded six tackles for loss, four sacks, 13 quarterback hurries, three interceptions, and another pass breakup. The versatility that he brings is impressive.

With how the recruitment ended between Notre Dame and Irvin’s older brother, it is interesting to see how strong an impression the Irish made on the younger Irvin. He is clearly a talented athlete, and one that the Irish value tremendously. Notre Dame won out on one of the more versatile defenders in the entire 2027 recruiting class, and early.
