Joe Burrow reveals just how much his hard work recovering from turf toe paid off
Joe Burrow beat his own goal in recovering from turf toe.
The more Joe Burrow learned about his turf toe injury, the greater chance he had at returning earlier than expected.
Leave it to the guy who’s been through these things before.
Burrow was given a 12-week recovery timeline after having surgery two days before the Cincinnati Bengals’ Week 3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. The middle of December was thought to be the target, but it didn’t take too long the goal to be expedited.
And, eventually, expedited even more.
Joe Burrow came back sooner than even he expected
Burrow went from getting around in a scooter, to a boot, to throwing again all within a month of his surgery according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer. This had the Bengals circling their Week 14 matchup against the Buffalo Bills as the game for Burrow to come back for, but as his recovery continued to progress in a positive direction, Week 13 against the Baltimore Ravens became the final goal.
“The plan all along was Buffalo. And then as we got closer to these games, it was feeling pretty dang good. And so then it moved up to [Thursday night]. And that would allow me to get two full weeks of practice in before this game. And those felt pretty good. And then we made the decision to think about it last week. And at the end of the day, I didn’t, but I was prepared to.” — Burrow reflecting on his recovery to SI’s Albert Breer
Mid-December, to first week of the month, and then an entire month earlier. That’s the progression Burrow made in his road to recovery, and how we got to see the two-time Comeback Player of the Year play this week.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter predicted Burrow would return in Week 14 soon after the 28-year old quarterback was cleared to practice, but Burrow being cleared when he was allowed him to practice enough to play on Thanksgiving night. Sure enough, Burrow came back to play the Ravens and led Cincinnati to a 34-12 victory in Baltimore.
The game in Buffalo will feature No. 9 under center for the Bengals, but Burrow will have an entire game under his belt and nine full days of rest before taking the field.
