Lane Kiffin is reportedly heading to Baton Rouge to take over as the head coach of the LSU Tigers.
Kiffin’s exit from Ole Miss has been messy say the least.
But once the dust settles on this bizarre saga, LSU will have landed the most coveted coach in this year’s coaching cycle. And it could quickly lead to some bad news for the Tennessee Vols.
Tennessee needs to keep an eye on five-star wide receiver commit Tristen Keys
It’s too early to know what the recruiting fallout will be from Kiffin’s move to LSU.
But one player that Vols fans should probably keep an eye on over the next couple of days is 2026 five-star wide receiver Tristen Keys.
Keys, 6-foot-3/180 lbs from Hattiesburg, MS, is rated by 247Sports as the No. 1 wide receiver in the nation. He’s been committed to Tennessee since August, when he flipped to the Vols after being committed to LSU for eight months.
I would expect Kiffin to take a shot at flipping Keys before the early signing period begins next week (December 3).
Kiffin, after all, was trying during the season, when he was still the head coach at Ole Miss, to flip Keys from Tennessee.
“Ole Miss is trying — the Rebels are doing all that they can to flip him,” noted 247Sports’ Tom Loy of Keys in late October.
Whether or not Kiffin will be successful is anyone’s guess, though it’s worth pointing out that Loy wrote in October that Keys is a “through and through Vol”.
Still, it would be foolish to think that Kiffin won’t attempt to swipe the best wide receiver recruit in the country from the Volunteers.
One thing that will help the Vols is that a recruiting dead period begins on Monday, though I’m not sure that will stop anyone at LSU from trying to convince Keys to flip his commitment.
My gut says Tennessee will hold on to Keys, but you never say never in this increasingly chaotic era of college football.
