Matt LaFleur reveals the subtle secret that keeps Jordan Love from turning the ball over and it challenges old narratives in 2025
Quarterback Jordan Love has had only three interceptions this year for the Packers.
Jordan Love was never a turnover-machine. In his first two seasons as a starter for the Green Bay Packers, he had 2.6 and 2.7 percent rate of turnover-worthy plays. This year, it’s been 2.6 throughout his first 12 games. But he had some rough stretches with interceptions, leading to 11 in each of the past two years, while now he’s only had three.
Even though interceptions happen and not all of them are the quarterback’s fault, head coach Matt LaFleur has seen some development from Love to take care of the football.
“There are a lot of factors in regards to that question, and you almost have to go through all the plays and all the tape,” LaFleur said. “He has done a pretty good job of, number one, throwing in the rhythm and the timing of the play, but showing the ability to progress and sometimes even throw it away when it’s not there instead of trying to force it down the field.”
Turnovers will matter against the Bears
The ability to avoid turnovers will be a key aspect of Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears. While the Bears are not necessarily a powerhouse despite their 9-3 record, they comfortably lead the NFL in turnover differential (+17), while the second teams are tied with +9 — the Packers are an average team in that regard, with +4. So far this season, Chicago has had 17 interceptions and nine fumble recoveries.
“They do a great job of getting the ball at the linebacker level and obviously in the back end with their corners and safeties,” LaFleur added. “So I think you got to do a really good job of making sure that we’re throwing within the rhythm and the timing of the play, and then you got to be able to progress when it’s not there, because if you just throw it up, I mean, they’ve made a lot of plays.”
One specific part of Love’s game that’s frequently analyzed is how he drifts back in the pocket to generate extra time. While he developed that ability to still be effective, it could lead to some dangerous plays from time to time.
“You gotta be careful. You never really want your quarterback going backwards, especially throwing off their back foot,” LaFleur explained. “So one of the things that we always talk about is just being balanced as a thrower, because I think that typically that’s going to lead to better accuracy and more success. That’s why I think defenses are always trying to get the quarterback off the spot just to get him to move. But when a guy is able to do that and show that ability, that’s a great plus for us in regards to his ability to buy himself some more time and still be accurate enough to throw that ball.”
Jordan Love is a refined passer, and avoiding mistakes will be a big part of an intense matchup with the Bears on Sunday.
