Green Bay Packers edge defender Micah Parsons shared details about his timeline to return from a torn ACL, and Green Bay’s early-season schedule without its best defensive player just got more complicated.

Parsons told NFL Network’s Brian Baldinger and Stacy Dales that his most optimistic return date is Week 6 against the Dallas Cowboys on Oct. 18. That’s not what Green Bay fans wanted to hear, even though it’s a reasonable outcome.

PUP list and what it means for the first games

It was already expected that Parsons would start the regular season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, which would force him to miss the first four games. That timeline alone would have put him in line to return for the Week 5 matchup against the Chicago Bears at Lambeau Field on Oct. 11. But after Parsons’ interview, that Bears game is also off the table.

The Packers suffered against Chicago without Parsons late last season. Green Bay beat the Bears at Lambeau Field with Parsons on the field, but lost to them twice without him. The first came in the regular season at Soldier Field, and the second was a wild card round loss in Chicago. A Week 5 NFC North matchup at Lambeau without their best defensive player is a significant challenge.

The good news is that Parsons could potentially suit up against the Dallas Cowboys in a “Sunday Night Football” game at Lambeau Field on Oct. 18. That would also put him in line to play the following week against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field on Oct. 25.

But the safest option for the Packers is Oct. 29 against the Carolina Panthers on “Thursday Night Football.” Playing Parsons in that game at Lambeau makes sense for multiple reasons. It’s a grass field, unlike the turf at Ford Field. And after facing the Panthers, Parsons would have 10 days before the next game against the New England Patriots on Nov. 8, giving him built-in recovery time.

New PUP rule could help the ramp-up period

Since Parsons is expected to start on the PUP list, he will inevitably miss the first four regular season games. But an adapted NFL rule could help him. Under the new regulation, Parsons can return to practice after Week 2. He would be able to participate in on-field activities and be with the team without counting against the 53-man roster before being activated. That opens his 21-day practice window earlier and gives the Packers more time for a proper ramp-up period before his first game.

That practice time will be especially important if Green Bay truly wants Parsons on the field for that Oct. 18 game against Dallas.

Micah Parsons tore his ACL on Dec. 14 against the Denver Broncos in Week 15 of last season and had ACL surgery along with a meniscus cleanup in late December. The Packers have a nine-month rule for injuries more significant than a pure ACL tear, so football activity before late September or early October is not expected.

The Oct. 18 date would give Parsons a two-to-three-week window of practice before getting up to speed. If all goes well, the Packers would have their best pass-rusher for the final two-thirds of the regular season and, if they reach that point, the playoffs as well.
