Sooners HC Brent Venables provides a crucial injury update just weeks before their College Football Playoff game
Brent Venables and the Sooners are ready for Alabama.
Brent Venables and his Oklahoma Sooners will play the Alabama Crimson Tide again, this time at home in a College Football Playoff game. They will be coming off of two weeks of rest by the time the game is played, which is perfect for a team that’s struggled with injuries pretty badly.
Venables has already given a bit of an injury update about two weeks out from the game.
“Gentry [Williams] had shoulder surgery, so he’ll be out,” Venables said during a Zoom press conference on Sunday after the selection show. “We will see on the other guys.”
By other guys, Venables primarily means edge rusher R Mason Thomas and offensive lineman Jake Maikkula.
“If they can play, they can play. If they can’t, they can’t,” Venables said. “That’s football. It’s late in the year. They’ve got guys that are down. That’s just part of the game.”
The Sooners will rest up and get ready for a game they can win – they’ve done it before.

We’ve all tried to forget last season as much as possible, but in 2024, the Sooners beat Alabama. It was a crazy game where the eventual six-win Sooners won at home with a bit of Sooner Magic.
Just weeks ago, the Sooners beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa, one of the toughest road game environments you can play in. Oklahoma forced the Crimson Tide to have several turnovers, and the Sooners did a good job of turning a few of those into points. That was a game where the stats may not show it, but the Sooners really controlled the game from start to finish.
This time around, they can do the same thing. And, there is the wildcard of the offense, which, after two weeks of rest, could be back into play as one that can at least move the ball up and down the field. Friday, Dec. 19, will be a blast.
