Almost every single Oklahoma Sooners fan can start to be happy about what a bad football season could mean for their fandom
The last time the Oklahoma Sooners had a losing season, the Oklahoma City Thunder had a Championship-winning season.
The Oklahoma Sooners have had quite the start to the season. They are now 2-2 with losses to the Michigan Wolverines and Georgia Bulldogs. You could also say they should have lost to the New Mexico Lobos because their showing was just that pitiful.
After the loss to Georgia, it’s clear they may not win another game. Now, sure, the Sooners’ defense could bail them out again. They quite literally won them every game last season. It could happen again. However, the defense doesn’t seem built the same way this season, as shown by their performance against Georgia. Then again, the offense did them no favors Saturday.
Despite a terrible football season, OU fans could be getting ready for a huge season in another sport. History says that a big season from the OKC Thunder is upon us.
The last time the Sooners had a losing season, the Oklahoma City Thunder won a championship. So maybe this is a good omen? I mean, you could chalk up OU’s winning season last year to the sacrifice OKC made by not winning it all. The same goes the other way around this season. In all seriousness, I’m just trying to give OU fans something to cling to, if there is anything at all.
OKC Thunder could have a huge season in 2026
Let’s start with the obvious: They have the best player in the world. Regardless of where you stand on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, it’s a fact, not an opinion: he is one of the best in the world. He’s a back-to-back MVP and was a Finals MVP in 2025. Not many have done what he has at his level. There hasn’t really been a guard as efficient and effective a scorer as him since Michael Jordan.
Then, the rest of their team is great, too. The Thunder are built around SGA, even in the supporting cast. There’s a host of wing players who can defend and shoot. But the team also has two other All-Stars: Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren. They are the perfect Robin to SGA’s Batman. One is a guy who can score in a multitude of ways, and the other is a really good wing defender: Williams. The other, Holmgren, is one of the league’s best rim protectors. And he can score a bit, too.
Now the Thunder did make some moves this offseason that have put the fan base at a bit of a distance. They traded away franchise legend Lu Dort, along with Aaron Wiggins and Isaiah Joe. These moves were made to save money and were necessary. That’s the depth they will be without. But, at the same time, they were by far the deepest team in the league.
These moves shouldn’t hurt them much considering what’s on the roster. So, yeah, there is a lot to look forward to in that aspect. And I know not every Sooners fan is a Thunder fan. But most are. This football team isn’t going to make a deep playoff run. But this Thunder team can and likely will.
