Sooners head coach Brent Venables gets deep and personal about the seriousness of Oklahoma’s playoff game
Sooners head coach Brent Venables was built for this playoff run.
No one thought Brent Venables would get the Oklahoma Sooners to where they’re at now. Last season, the Sooners looked like they could be stuck in a bad situation that could carry over into 2025. Now, they’ve won 10 games and are staring at a home playoff game against the Alabama Crimson Tide.
As many would say, this upcoming game is the biggest one in Venables’ career as a head coach. Sure, it is because it’s his first playoff game as a head coach, but he heard the same thing every single game he played this season. Venables is not worried.
Brent Venables opens up on having a chip on his shoulder
“Every game we’ve played this year has been the biggest game of my career,” Venables said on a Zoom press conference after the selection show. “Not a lot of people have believed we would do what we’ve done… We’re just thankful to have an opportunity…”
When their Week 2 game against the Michigan Wolverines came, everyone said it was Venables’ most important game. And that statement was true. Venables had two six-win seasons in his three full years. Going into the season, if there was a repeat of last season, many people would be calling for his job,
When the Auburn Tigers were ranked, that was the next biggest game of his career. When the Sooners played the Texas Longhorns, it was also the biggest game of his tenure. When the Sooners played all of their SEC opponents, with some sort of implications on the line this season, it was the biggest game of his career.
Venables mentioned a few times throughout the season that he recognizes the biggest game of his career is the next one. This time, it really is, but Venables is not fazed by the pressure. This team has a chip on its shoulder. The defense plays the same way Venables coaches – loud, hard, and unrelenting. Against Alabama, it will need all hands on deck.
