Notre Dame receives their first Transfer Portal loss following the controversial College Football Playoff decision
Notre Dame just suffered the first loss of their offseason.
Notre Dame football was dealt some difficult news over the weekend when it was announced they were being left out of the College Football Playoff field. Both Alabama and Miami would occupy the last two at-large spots, leaving the Fighting Irish on the outside looking in. Head coach Marcus Freeman and the program then opted to withdraw the Irish from any bowl game opportunities. In the blink of an eye, their 2025 college football season was over.
With an early offseason setting in, there are going to be several Notre Dame defections on the horizon, both via the NFL Draft and the Transfer Portal. We saw the first former Irish player enter on Monday when quarterback Kenny Minchey decided to see what other options are out there. This is a move that takes very few by surprise with Minchey sitting behind starting quarterback CJ Carr, who will be the Irish signal caller for at least one more season.
The move makes sense for Minchey
During this past offseason, Minchey was in a deep battle with Carr to earn the starting quarterback spot. A redshirt sophomore, Minchey had waited for his turn patiently, but would need to beat out the younger signal caller. Right before Freeman and the Irish staff announced the starting quarterback, it appeared like Minchey could end up getting that nod. He had a really strong process, including showcasing his good overall athleticism and a more assertive personality that we had seen in the past.
When Carr was announced, it took some by surprise, but ultimately, Notre Dame opted for the younger talented option behind center. Minchey has been a good soldier for the team, serving as a backup, and he remained a positive member of the program throughout the season. When Minchey was given opportunities to play, he showed off the talent that he brings to the table. In six games played, Minchey has completed 20 of 26 passes for 196 yards, while also rushing for 84 yards and a touchdown on just seven carries.
With two years of eligibility remaining, this feels like the right time for Minchey to go after another opportunity. He is an extremely talented quarterback, and he will excel in a new environment. Unfortunately for Minchey, he was just at the right place at the wrong time with the Irish and had to battle with another very gifted quarterback.
Kenny Minchey’s background
The 6-2, 208-pound passer was originally a member of the 2023 recruiting class for Notre Dame. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Minchey was rated as the No. 170 overall player, the No. 14 quarterback, and the No. 3 player in the state of Tennessee in the class. He was originally committed to the Pitt Panthers before opting to flip to the Fighting Irish. Minchey redshirted during his first season on campus to preserve a year of eligibility for him.
While things may not have worked out for Minchey in South Bend, his future is still very bright. There is expected to be a strong market for the talented signal caller. It will be interesting to see where the Tennessee native winds up.
