OU football head coach Brent Venables acknowledged a major issue that has to be fixed before their playoff game
Brent Venables and the Sooners will have a lot of preparing to do for their playoff game vs. Alabama.
Friday, December 19, the Oklahoma Sooners are set to host the Alabama Crimson Tide in a playoff game. Last season, the Sooners looked like a program who may not make the College Football Playoff for a while. Now, they’re in, with work still to do. If they want an even better chance at beating Alabama, the offense has to be fixed. Everyone knows that, and everyone’s been waiting for that to happen for some time now.
OU head coach Brent Venables is likely going to use this break he gets before playing Alabama, to try and fix some things on offense.
“I’m incredibly proud of our football team, our staff… This is an opportunity for us to start completely over… We’d love to get back to the rhythm that we had earlier in the year.”
Sooners can’t fix the offense, but can fix some things in the offense
OU has one of the worst offenses in the SEC, but at the beginning of the season it was fairly decent. The Sooners also weren’t playing much competition then. Oklahoma was playing FCS schools and Group of Five teams. There is also the whole John Mateer thumb situation to be added onto it all as well.
All in all, though, the offense has been pretty bad. They don’t really have an identity. We thought they had one with the run game there for a stretch of games, but it’s since fallen off, primarily because of injuries. They need to use this break to improve the offense, not fix it. There is no fixing the offense – it’s far too late for that.
However, the Sooners can still use this break to improve certain areas. They can use this time to create and find their identity. In other words, get everyone healthy so this run game can get back to when it was at it’s best this season. Then, from there, work on some different run concepts that have worked, but haven’t been used as much as they maybe should have.
Work on some of the quick pass game stuff, and of course, the QB run game has to be better, too. You don’t have to fix the offense, you just have to get it going.
