‘He reached out to Tennessee on Signing Day and wanted back in’ – Insider shares insight on Legend Bey saga with Vols and Ohio State
The Tennessee Vols signed four-star athlete Legend Bey during the early signing period, but he could be destined to land at Ohio State.
The Tennessee Vols are currently involved in one of the strangest recruiting sagas we’ve ever seen, as 2026 four-star athlete Legend Bey was committed to Tennessee from late June to November before flipping to Ohio State following a visit to Columbus.
Bey unexpectedly flipped back to Tennessee on the first day of the early signing period.
The Vols announced Bey’s signing and then things got weird.
A report surfaced that stated Bey preferred to sign with Ohio State, but his mom wouldn’t sign off on that decision.
“Sources told 247Sports Wednesday evening that Bey was unhappy with the decision and would seek a path to be released from Tennessee and end up at Ohio State,” reported 247Sports’ Mike Roach. “We were told that this would likely play out in three weeks when Bey turns 18 years old on Christmas Eve, but Bey decided to communicate his unrest Thursday.”
On3’s Sam Spiegelman reported on the Rivals YouTube channel last week that Bey’s mother went to Knoxville before signing day to pick up the four-star athlete’s signing day papers.
“Legend Bey’s mother actually went to Knoxville the weekend before signing day to meet with the Tennessee coaches, by herself, to pick up the paperwork — whether he or his mom signed on signing day, that remains up in the air,” explained Spiegelman. “I have one source that says the signature with Legend Bey at Tennessee was forged, and that Legend still does not want to go to Knoxville. We’ve seen the famous tweet hit the social media airwaves — that his family has basically locked him out of his account. And as of Friday morning, the last day of the signing window, we’re still hearing this is a family that’s kind of in disagreement about where this prolific four-star athlete is going to end up playing.”
At this point, it’s unclear where Bey will play in 2026.
Vols insider shares new insight on the Legend Bey drama with Tennessee and Ohio State
VolQuest’s Austin Price joined 104.5 The Zone’s Ramon and Will on Tuesday for his weekly appearance and he shared some insight on the situation with Bey.
“He reached out to Tennessee on Signing Day and wanted back in (with the Vols),” said Price. “Tennessee was expecting him to go to Ohio State to start the day. Obviously, they would love to have him, so they take him. He’s on the phone when he signs the scholarship papers. Josh Heupel comes in there and meets the media. Shortly after that, I text [Bey] and he says he’ll do the interview. He calls me. We’re on the phone. I mean, it doesn’t sound like he’s being held hostage.
“The only thing I can go off of is he had buyer’s remorse, because he was so wishy washy through the process. And it is what it is. If I’m Tennessee, I just let him go. If he wants to go to Ohio State, let him go. He’s going to be able to do whatever he wants to in the end anyway. Now, I would tell you this, to go in the portal, whether you’re 18 or not, since he went ahead and signed, you have to go to class. Well, the portal closes before Tennessee goes to class. So technically, Tennessee doesn’t have to let anybody that signs out of their deal…but I think Tennessee certainly would. Because Tennessee wants to do right by the kid. They don’t want anybody feeling like they don’t want to be here, and they’re being forced to go here. So again, I think you’re in the process right now of Tennessee talking to Legend Bey and getting all of that stuff figured out. But he’s certainly been a little bit all over the map, and I think that’s what’s resulted in this story. And then, of course, a lot of the embellishment is from certain parties to make it look like he was being held hostage when he was not.”
“He’s a kid — it’s okay [that he’s all over the map],” added Price. “And I think that’s where Tennessee’s at with it. Again, some of the embellishment — like that he’s being held hostage — let’s just call it what it is, [the embellishment from] the Ohio State media is a bit much. But I would also tell you that Ohio State was totally on the phone with him after he signed with Tennessee (which isn’t allowed)…So, it is what it is. Let the kid go do his thing. If it’s at Ohio State, it’s at Ohio State. If it’s somewhere else, it’s somewhere else. Let the kid be happy.”
This is a situation that probably won’t be resolved for at least a couple of weeks. For now, though, it would be a bit of a surprise if Bey ends up playing on Rocky Top next fall.
