Bills’ star faces an obvious issue he must fix, or doubt will grow about whether the team’s heavy investment in him can still be justified
The problem has to be fixed, immediately.
The Buffalo Bills are coming off one of the most exciting wins of the season. It had all the makings of an instant classic: Snow was falling, quarterback Josh Allen was doing Josh Allen things, and the team mounted a valiant fourth-quarter comeback to secure the victory.
It wasn’t without faults, though. One player in particular has been having some issues of late, and it needs to be fixed immediately, as the playoffs are looming. Running back James Cook has had a fumble problem lately, and it reared its ugly head in the win against the Cincinnati Bengals.
On one drive, Cook fumbled twice. However, his first fumble was ruled not a touchback, and a penalty set up Buffalo in the red zone. Marching down the field, trying to secure the first lead of the game, Cook fumbled the ball into the end zone a few plays later, giving Cincinnati the ball right back.
James Cook needs to stop fumbling the football
I haven’t played a lick of football in my life, but I know one thing for certain: you can’t have consistent turnovers and expect to win football games. Whether it’s Allen’s interceptions or Cook’s fumbles, the team needs to clean things up, and fast.
The Bills signed Cook to a massive $48 million contract extension in the offseason, and he’s looked worth every penny throughout the 2025 season, even with his turnovers.
Though, as of late, even with his rushing numbers, he’s left much to be desired with turning the ball over, already having a career high in the category, as it has picked up in recent weeks.
Cook has the most fumbles in the NFL with six, while also having the most rushing attempts in the league. No other non-quarterback has five fumbles on the season. When looking at it from a per-touch basis, only New England Patriots RB Rhamondre Stevenson has fumbled more often.
Cook has been fantastic and has helped the team tremendously throughout the season, but he simply needs to find a way to stop fumbling the football, or it will hurt the team in the long run.
If he can correct the issue at hand, Buffalo’s offense becomes that much more dangerous. If the fumbling trend were to continue, it’s the kind of problem that can derail a playoff run in an instant.
