Jon Sumrall continues to present overwhelming evidence that he’s the right man to lead the Florida Gators
Jon Sumrall is setting the gold standard of how to leave a program the right way, and others should follow his lead.
When the Florida Gators were making their hire for the next head coach, the focus was on now LSU Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin. It’s what the fanbase craved, because he modeled himself to be like Gators legendary head coach Steve Spurrier.
That’s now how things went down, as the Gators hired Jon Sumrall to be the next head coach. It wasn’t the most popular hire in Gainesville, but he is slowly winning everyone over. Sumrall may have some characteristics that are similar to former head coach Billy Napier, but he has more that line up with Urban Meyer.
Jon Sumrall is handling coaching transition perfectly
Coaches often leave a program to go to another, especially when they are at the other Group of Five level and elevate to the Power Four. When that happens, you usually see them bring multiple players or recruits to their next stop. When Napier came to Florida, he brought with him right guard O’Cyrus Torrence and running back Montrell Johnson Jr., both of whom played major roles for the Gators in their tenure.
With Sumrall coming to Gainesville, he was tasked with signing two recruiting classes, as he is working at both Florida and Tulane through the Green Wave’s time in the College Football Playoff. It can be a challenging thing for a head coach to navigate, and Sumrall’s done a masterful job of doing right by both schools. He told Wake Up Barstool that he didn’t try to take any recruits from the Green Wave’s recruiting class.
“I told the team at Tulane, I will not talk to them about going in the portal at all,” said Sumrall. ” If any guy goes in the portal and they’re good enough to play here, then I’ll recruit them, but I’ll have zero conversation [before that]. I didn’t steal one side one commit from Tulane to Florida. Yeah, we signed 14 dudes at Tulane last week, with no head coach in place for 2026. We signed 18 guys here at Florida. I flipped zero commitments to Florida. If we got a player on our roster at Tulane that goes in the portal, if he’s good enough to play here, I’m going to call him, but I will recruit zero of them to go into the portal.”
It’s a very honorable thing that Sumrall did to not poach players, and that’s not something you often see. It’s actually refreshing to see a coach truly try to care about both universities. That’s not normal, but it should be. Sumrall continues to prove that he’s the right guy for the job.
