The Tennessee Vols have a big opportunity to improve their roster thanks to the Michigan Wolverines’ shocking move to fire head coach Sherrone Moore.

Michigan fired Moore for cause on Wednesday due to an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.

Could Tennessee swipe 2026 five-star RB Savion Hiter from Michigan?

The Vols put together an impressive 2026 recruiting class — ranked No. 7 in the nation — by landing some of their top targets, including five-star quarterback Faizon Brandon, five-star offensive lineman Gabe Osenda, and five-star wide receiver Tristen Keys.

One player that was high on the Vols’ board that they didn’t land was five-star running back Savion Hiter, who signed with Michigan last week.

Hiter was ranked as the No. 1 running back in the 2026 recruiting class.

With the Wolverines in the midst of a major coaching change, it’s reasonable that Hiter could choose to head south to Knoxville instead of playing for a coach that didn’t recruit him at Michigan (that depends, of course, on who replaces Moore in Ann Arbor).

Tennessee was a major player in Hiter’s recruitment. The Vols, in fact, received Hiter’s final official visit last summer. Michigan won the recruiting battle, but the Vols weren’t far behind in second place.

I don’t think Hiter will be in a rush to make a move, but if he decides to leave Michigan, you have to assume that Tennessee would be his top choice.

The Vols, by the way, didn’t sign a running back during the 2026 recruiting cycle.

Can Savion Hiter leave Michigan even though he signed already?

Hiter officially signed with Michigan last week during the early signing period.

According to ESPN, if a coach leaves after the early signing period, “players are granted their release without penalty”. So, it sounds like Hiter could leave Michigan if that’s what he wants to do.

Tennessee needs to be ready to swoop in if Hiter leaves Michigan — he would instantly make the Vols a better team.
