Michigan’s next head coach may be on the Detroit Lions’ staff
Lions Passing Game Coordinator David Shaw could be considered for the Michigan head coaching job
What a whirlwind couple of days it has been for the University of Michigan. The Wolverines have fired their head coach, Sherrone Moore, and there is a ton of controversy attached to it. But we’re not getting into any of that today. What we will talk about is the potential Wolverines coach who is coaching right up the street with the Detroit Lions.

I get it. There are some good coaches out there, like Oregon’s Dan Lanning or Indiana’s Curt Cignetti. I also get that there’s this belief that because Michigan is Michigan, it can just get these guys to walk away from their current roles. Maybe 10 years ago, that would have been true. Maybe even a few years ago, that would have been true. It’s not anymore.
The Wolverines are coming off back-to-back scandals. The whole Connor Stallions thing may not be a big deal to you, like it is to the rest of the world, but it is. Then there’s the stuff with Moore. It’s just not looking good right now, and like Michigan State, the Wolverines might have to take what they can get.
But with David Shaw, you’re not getting a scrub. You’re getting a guy who has a combined 30 years worth of coaching experience between college and the NFL and has 12 years of head coaching and recruiting experience at Stanford. He was 95-46 there, with eight bowl game appearances, winning five. Things didn’t end well there, but you won’t have the recruiting power at Stanford that you would at Michigan.
Speaking of those two schools, Shaw can get a recommendation from the guy who hired him at Stanford and then took over after he left for the NFL. The same guy who coached Michigan to a National Championship just a few years ago. We’re talking about Jim Harbaugh.
I’m not saying that we’re hearing anything or something like that. I’m saying that Michigan needs to get someone hired pretty soon because recruiting never stops, and there’s a guy down the street who can take the job if it can’t find the guy it wants, and the guys it’ll try to steal all say no.
