Unexpected option may have just fallen into the lap of the Michigan Wolverines to replace Sherrone Moore
Could former Utah Utes head coach Kyle Whittingham be the fit the Michigan Wolverines need as head coach to replace Sherrone Moore?
The college football world is still reeling from the firing of Michigan Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore out of left field on Wednesday, and the fallout from that is still echoing across the landscape. The coaching search for his replacement could send shockwaves through what has already been what has been a dizzying coaching carousel.
On Friday, however, a potential replacement might have just fallen into their lap due to potential turmoil elsewhere in the college football world, and he could be the perfect option to replace Moore and steady the program through the rocky period they seem to be going through right now.
Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham is stepping away from Utah after being with the Utes since 1994. Whittingham was the second-longest tenured coach in college football, only behind Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz. However, Whittingham is evidently not retiring and, according to the Athletic’s Stewart Mandel, could be interested in pursuing opportunities elsewhere. Could elsewhere mean Ann Arbor?
Whittingham could be perfect fit for Michigan Wolverines
Given all of the fallout surrounding the Sherrone Moore saga and the potential for several individuals to be affected by the impending investigation, there’s a possibility for this to be a rocky time for the Wolverines. Whittingham could be a steadying presence for the Wolverines through this time.
It’s also not like Whittingham doesn’t deserve an opportunity at a school like Michigan either. Whittingham led the Utes to eight of their 11 10+ win seasons in school history, 17 of the school’s 27 bowl bids, and his 177 career wins are third among all active coaches and are 38th all-time. Bo Schembechler is the only Michigan coach in history who has eclipsed that figure.
The identity of team that Whittingham has cultivated at Utah is a perfect culture fit for the Wolverines, and fits seamlessly with the style of play Jim Harbaugh brought to the team. The Utes have always been physical, high-culture and high-motor teams that play elite defense and a dominant ground-and-pound offense.
Michigan is a program that will demand winning, successful coaches, and there aren’t many better than Whittingham. His age will be a detractor for some, but the Wolverines have made it clear they want a coach in place by January 2nd when the transfer portal opens, and they wouldn’t have to wait for the College Football Playoff to end to bring Whittingham in.
