The Kansas City Chiefs’ season is practically over. Well, a few more games remain on the 2025 schedule, but with their playoff chances officially at 0% and Patrick Mahomes having a torn ACL, the season is indeed over. Now, from here, they see what they will have for next season.

The evaluation process likely started long ago, but it has only intensified since then. The Chiefs will look at what every player does over these next three games, specifically the young guys and the ones on expiring deals, and see whether they want to bring them back for next year. They may not want to bring them back, but it’s clear they found some great depth on the offensive line in Esa Pole and Chu Godrick.

Andy Reid talks Esa Pole and Chu Godrick after loss to Los Angeles Chargers

“These young guys had an opportunity to play,” Reid told reporters after the loss to the Chargers. “We had a chance to see what they can do. I thought they did a respectable job in there. That’s good as we grow as a team… Chu has come a long way from not playing much football. Great that he had a chance to compete.”

The Chiefs struggled with injuries all season, maybe more than ever in the dynasty era. The offensive line seemed to have taken the brunt of it. Against the Chargers, and even when they played the Houston Texans last week, the Chiefs had three to four offensive tackles out in Jawaan Taylor, Josh Simmons, Wanya Morris, and now Jaylon Moore.

This allowed guys like Esa Pole to come in and shut down Danielle Hunter on the Texans. This game, he gave up a sack, but he still played fairly well, all things considered. Godrick came in and played well, too. Neither of these guys played like a future starter, but they showed they can be really good depth pieces for the Chiefs.

That’s what the rest of the season is about, too.
