Texas A&M Aggies find the absolute best thing possible to lead their offense for next season and beyond
The Texas A&M Aggies have solved their offensive coordinator problem, promoting wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins
The Texas A&M Aggies were hit with some tough news to swallow a couple of weeks when it was announced that offensive coordinator Collin Klein would leave the Aggies to serve as head coach of his alma mater, the Kansas State Wildcats.
Head coach Mike Elko ran an extensive search for their next offensive coordinator, although it took back seat for the Aggies’ prep for their College Football Playoff matchup against Miami. The Aggies will turn to a familiar name to serve as Klein’s replacement for the 2026 season.
Holmon Wiggins will be Texas A&M’s next offensive coordinator
The Aggies promoted wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins to serve as their next offensive coordinator. Wiggins will handle play-calling duties as well. As of now, it’s unknown if Wiggins will continue to coach wide receivers, and the Aggies will still need to hire a new quarterbacks coach.
Mike Elko spoke about the decision to promote from within with Wiggins: ” I did a pretty extensive offensive coordinator search, talked to five different candidates who were all running offenses at different places across the country, and really felt like the right person for the job was Holmon Wiggins. We’ve decided to elevate Holmon Wiggins to offensive coordinator. He’s the only person we offered the position to. He accepted, so we’re very excited with him leading our offense into the future. He’ll do a phenomenal job, so we’re really excited about that. I think that’s the absolute best thing for Texas A&M football moving forward.”
Wiggins has served as A&M’s wide receivers coach for the last two seasons. Before that, he held the same role for the Alabama Crimson Tide under Nick Saban from 2019-23. He has also coached wide receivers at Virginia Tech and Memphis. Throughout his career, Wiggins has built a strong track record of development, coaching names like Anthony Miller, Isaiah Ford, Cam Phillips, Jerry Jeudy, DeVonta Smith, Henry Ruggs III, Jaylen Waddle, John Metchie, Jameson Williams, Jermaine Burton, and most recently KC Concepcion and Mario Craver with the Aggies.
Some risk with Holmon Wiggins as offensive coordinator
This will be Wiggins’ first time as a play caller at any level of football, so it’s a pretty big step forward. For an A&M program looking to keep their momentum rolling, there are some risks they are accepting with Wiggins as a first-time play caller.
Additionally, depending on the divvying of responsibilities, Wiggins won’t be able to focus completely on wide receivers as he has done in the past. As one of the best wide receiver coaches and developers in college football, this could be a fairly significant blow for the development of that position. Even if he retains that position role, not all of his time on and off gameday will be available to focus on that room.
Regardless, Elko clearly trusts him to run the offense and keep it as smooth of a transition from Klein as it can be. Hopefully, he can deliver similar (or even better) results than Klein did at the helm of the Aggies’ offense.
