Latest Notre Dame recruiting victory begs an interesting question that Fighting Irish fans are going to love to try and answer
Notre Dame just pulled another outstanding recruiting victory, and it should surprise nobody.
Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman has completely altered the outlook for the Fighting Irish on the recruiting trail. Along with secondary coach Mike Mickens, the two have become a dynamic duo to attract top-level defensive back talent. That impact doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.
On Monday, Notre Dame received a massive commitment from elite 2027 Raleigh (N.C.) Cardinal Gibbons cornerback Xavier Hasan. The Irish were able to land Hasan over an extremely offer list, including Ohio State, Tennessee, and UNC, among many others. Not only is this another great victory for Mickens and company, it also inspires a fascinating conversation.
It is a discussion that Notre Dame fans are going to love to have.
A fun debate
If you look at recruiting under Mickens during his tenure, you are really splitting hairs debating which one is the most talented player overall coming out of high school. That list includes Hasan, Leonard Moore, Benjamin Morrison, Christian Gray, Dallas Golden, Mark Zackery, Khary Adams, and Ayden Pouncey. There is a legitimate argument about who the most talented player is on that list.
It is easy to talk about Moore, and he has a great argument at the top of the list. So does Morrison. So does Adams, and so does Hasan. That is the point of the conversation. There is no wrong answer, but a great discussion.
Xavier Hasan’s recruiting background
Hasan is considered a top-100-caliber recruit by multiple major recruiting platforms right now. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Hasan ranks as the No. 38 overall player, the No. 4 cornerback, and the No. 1 player from the state of North Carolina for the 2027 recruiting class. Those rankings are enough to get everyone excited.
The 6-0, 180-pound cornerback is not short of options to play at the college level, even outside his finalists. His offer list is about as strong as you will find in the 2027 recruiting class overall. Some of the top programs that have offered Hasan include the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Ohio State, Oregon, Tennessee, Florida, Ole Miss, Penn State, Miami, Florida State, Nebraska, Auburn, Louisville, NC State, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, South Carolina, Arkansas, Michigan State, UNC, Indiana, Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Maryland, Virginia Tech, Rutgers, Virginia, Wake Forest, Wisconsin, UCLA, and SMU, among many others.
In 12 games as a junior, opposing offenses have done whatever they can to steer clear of Hasan. He recorded just 17 total tackles and three interceptions during the season. Hasan also handled both kickoff and punt return duties for the team, having returned two for touchdowns on the year.
That’s fresh off a sophomore year when Hasan intercepted seven passes and broke up another eight, and it appears opponents have learned from their 2024 mistakes for the most part.
